I have been working at Newport Mesa USD full-time

    Pros

Newport Mesa unified school District is a student centered district of excellence. Their motto is every child every day. They are committed to developing students who can compete in the 21st-century and be college and career ready by the time they graduate.

    Cons

Newport Mesa developed leaders through a comprehensive leadership Program. If only there were enough positions for everybody to keep advancing.

    Advice to Management

Newport Mesa unified school district as best, develop educational leaders that are student centered and civic minded. And for that I will always be truly grateful.

I have been working at Newport Mesa USD (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The salary schedule for teachers is around the 75th percentile for Orange County.

    Cons

District administration lacks integrity and transparency. The district office is a mess.

    Advice to Management

Use the input of the teachers and community. When you ask for input, but clearly don't honestly consider it, or just openly dismiss it, you pay the price in morale and disgruntled employees who don't feel valued. Students suffer when teachers aren't happy.

I worked at Newport Mesa USD part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pay finally went up to a normal rate, and they pay you for extra periods worked.

    Cons

Half the schools are dangerous and mismanaged. People at district office, especially at "Substitute Desk" are ridiculously slow and unhelpful. Hiring process is slow and outdated.

    Advice to Management

Modernize! And hire qualified people with customer service skills and a sense of urgency.

I have been working at Newport Mesa USD (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Close to the ocean. Cooled by ocean breezes from the beautiful Pacific.

    Cons

Can't think of any at the moment. I was laid off from my job in Adult Ed, and would love to go back to teaching ESL several days or nights a week.

    Advice to Management

I have wished in the past when substituting for a quicker response when calling the main office asking them to remove a student.

    Cons

Distant uninvolved administration at the top level

I worked at Newport Mesa USD part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very close to my home, loved working with the kids, alot of the employees were nice.

    Cons

No benefits, principal did not follow school rules and "throws people under the bus" quite often. Discipline was very lax with no follow through on punnishment. Some kids were out of control and very disrespectful. Enormous amount of bullying that was either not addressed or even encouraged by one teacher. No training provided and then any authority is taken away when you try to enforce school rules.

    Advice to Management

Look more closely at the way the school is run by the principal.

I have been working at Newport Mesa USD part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay is pretty good but if you use benefits, it eats it up real quick.

    Cons

Used to be a great place to work. No respect, or acknowledgement anymore. Administration acts as if you don't exist. Some schools are great and super welcoming, others are cold and treat you as if you mean nothing.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate those who care and do their jobs!
