I worked at News Corp full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Exceptionally smart leadership. Great location. Generally nice people. Great experience for professionals who seek to understand corporate America at its best, and for people to absorb deep knowledge of their field because News Corp has great SMEs.

    Cons

Not a lot of training for "managers & below." Peers either keep to themselves or become clique-ish. The term "every man for him/herself" can be used well here because there isn't a great deal of teamwork taking place at News Corp.

I found that no sense of achievement came from completing a project at News Corp. I didn't have a manager who patted me on the back when I did a great job, and that was fine for me. But if you're looking for that, News Corp is the wrong place for you. Similarly, if you're looking for a manager to tell you what you're doing wrong and who will help you get better, News Corp is also the wrong place for you.

    Advice to Management

Plan and develop opportunities to train and develop your employees.

I worked at News Corp as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Extremely coordinated tax department, with very competend and friendly people. I had a great experience while I was working at News Corp.

    Cons

Sometimes there would not be much work for me to do as an intern, but everyone was always very helpful and understanding when I got swamped with things to do

    Advice to Management

I would suggest that you keep your interns occupied and keep trying to teach them more. The internship program at News Corp is great, and I was completely happy with it.

    Advice to Management

Upgrade Systems, and bring in qualified help.

I worked at News Corp full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

People were professional, fun, friendly, collaborative for the most part. Like any place, you're gonna have politics and a couple of bad apples. My job was to bridge IT and the businesses and that for the most part was working - people were responsive to the mission

    Cons

Politics can get in the way of the actual job.

    Advice to Management

Turf wars impact morale and execution. What do you do to discourage or discipline such unproductive behaviors....

    Pros

Great benefits, nice people (mostly young families)

    Cons

Like any large company that has been around for a long time, some upper management are stagnant and resistant to change. Not all, just some

    Pros

Very entrepreneurial environment that encourages risk taking.

    Cons

Decentralized systems and structure creates inefficiencies

    Advice to Management

Find a happy medium between allowing companies the freedom to operate on their own while creating efficiencies for the overall company through better infrastructure and information sharing

    Pros

    PRO
High per diem rate for independent contracting, good personal support from staff, but that may have to do with a high comfort level with reporting from outside the central office and rarely being embroiled in internal office politics. Turnover gives one a chance to move up. Young, friendly staff.
Billing issues resolved in a good manner that is as efficient as they can be, given that the office I work with has to deal with a central bureaucracy. They want to keep their stringers happy.

    Cons

A sclerotic view of institutional change, e.g. expansion, has made it difficult to understand why a 6 billion dollar publicly traded company can't commit to a new news bureau. Artistically, limited change in form of news story. Creative potential not 100% realized.

    Advice to Management

Go to bat more to make the news programming more of what you believe in your heart it should be.
