Great place to be a journalist (on most days, anyway)

      Pros

Newsday has been a great place for me to work, grow as a journalist and feel appreciated by the people who manage the newsroom. I was on this site checking another company, got curious to see Newsday's reviews and was shocked at all the negativity, so I had to add my two cents. This remains a real news publication with a successful print product that pursues ambitious journalistic projects and publishes enterprise stories on a regular basis. It's daily coverage of local issues is superb and maintains some standards that keep it from becoming the all sensational tabloid that we're used to in the city. I would venture to say this is probably the best tabloid size publication in the United States. The paper is not just the paper, but also a website and app that, yes, could use some upgrading to be more readable, but delivers quality content and is updated throughout the day.

      Cons

It is true. There's quite a lot of micro-managing going on from management to editors and editors to most reporters. But guess what? This is how the publication keeps its standards at a pretty consistent level. It is not a situation that a smart person can't work around. Many of the staff members who have left in bad terms were pretty difficult people to work with in the first place, so it's unlikely they'll find another employer that will tolerate their narcissistic personalities. I think Newsday can improve and that its current editors need not forget what makes the place respected: strong journalism, bold writing and a tradition of enterprise work. They need not be so afraid of rocking the vote, as long as the journalism is solid, and they shouldn't turn back on a tradition of descriptive writing that sets the place apart from your meat-and-potatoes dailies in the city.

      Cons

      Pros

For those who like local news and the push-pull of deadlines, it is a great place. Colleagues are wonderful. Management is management.

      Cons

Salaries are flat. Health care insurance is very costly and eats into salary, even for those with no health issues. Managers are skilled at their jobs, but not in management.
