I worked at Newton Massachusetts part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The pay was pretty good for part-time.

    Cons

Nepotism is rampant. Even at the highest levels (non-union), sons and daughters are brought on, when others need the jobs more, probably to make ends meet. Sons and daughters arrive late, leave early, take long lunch breaks, and nothing can be said. Maybe that's just the way it is in government.

    Advice to Management

Management is involved in the nepotism. There should be a City ordinance against it unless there is absolutely NO ONE else who can do the job.

    Cons

you are not compensated for your work, but other than that there really isn't too much to be negative about

    Advice to Management

management is great, very help, maybe try to persuade the aldermen to compensate the interns! other than that, nothing really more to add

I worked at Newton Massachusetts part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Grew up working for the city as a gym supervisor and lifeguard. Loved it, loved the people I worked with. Best job a kid could have.

    Cons

For me there were down sides. If I went back in time with the wisdom of age, I would do it all over again for free.

    Advice to Management

Think about makes and made Newton special for all of these years and keep it going.

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Newton Massachusetts (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent pay scale and good benefits. Coworkers and culture can be great, depending on your department.

    Cons

Major lack of communication from both city departments and upper level assistant superintendent departments. City in particular often changes policies and procedures without informing school departments which leads to major delays (and frustration). Typical bureaucracy challenges and many employees don't do their job responsibilities for fear of getting in trouble.

    Advice to Management

Department/Job responsibilities need to be clearly spelled out.
Mayor's office/City Hall needs to have a better understanding of project timelines and preferably stop treating other employees like garbage.

    Pros

The City receives a lot of funding to oversee many programs so you can gain a wide range of experience.

    Cons

The executive office does not provide support or resources for staff. Residents and the Board of Aldermen are demanding and disrespectful to staff.

    Advice to Management

Promote from within and recognize support staff.

Executive Management Team which does not partner with division directors. Often will by pass directors and enact policies, practices and staffing decision. Lack of communicated long term planning, and ambiguous direction. Slow to change.

    Advice to Management

Learn to partner, communicate, and allow directors to run their divisions. Three HR director in 4 years!
