I worked at Newton Public Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I had supportive colleagues. I enjoyed the students. Many of the parents were very involved in their child's education. For the most part there were. good facilities.

    Cons

I worked for one outstanding principal and two that were less than satisfactory. The central administration kept piling more and more on teacher's plates without regard for the teacher's ability to get everything done.

    Advice to Management

I would tighten things up so that teachers had more time to delve deeply into subjects and build relationships with students. I'd advise them to do a better job hiring principals.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Newton Public Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

High pay, highly skilled co-workers, many good, decent, hard-working students and parents; admin is often open to trying new ideas and methods (at least until the first parent expresses a doubt)

    Cons

far too many entitled students and helicopter parents, no support for new faculty, and a cynical culture focused on short-term grades and MCAS scores, rather than preparing students to succeed in college and workplace. Parents who disagree with a teacher complain to admin, not to the teacher, and admin will side with the parent.

    Advice to Management

Be aware that teaching at South is more difficult than at most schools, not because of the high teaching expectations, but because of the irregular daily schedule and the high technology level's learning curve. Be aware that even experienced teacher candidates will find the demands overwhelming at first and will require close, detailed supervision to succeed. Be candid with prospective hires: South is not for everyone, and South buys skill rather than developing it in-house. Students and therefore teachers face enormous pressure. The parents run the show and they cut new teachers no slack.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Newton Public Schools full-time

    Pros

Wonderful families, teachers and students. Families have high expectations, but generally provide a great deal of support to help children reach their goals.

    Cons

Many cons at NPS. Special education programs are inefficient and do not cater to student's individual needs, leaving behavior therapists responsible for modifying and creating curriculum for a variety of subjects. BCBAs have an unmanageable case load and cannot possibly spend the allotted amount of time with designated students. In my personal experience, principals looked the other way when concerns arose.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Newton Public Schools full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Support from classroom teacher, students were wonderful and pleasant. Opportunities to leave the room if student was escalated.

    Cons

BCBA could present as rude at times. Did not like when direct care staff provided feedback about behavior plan. Ineffective plans were still implemented.

    Advice to Management

Provide more support to inclusion facilitators and BCBAs more closely. Provide additional trainings to classroom teacher. Education to staff about ABA and strategies in the classroom.

    Wonderful collegial atmosphere

    Cons

Heavy workload, unrealistic expectations sometimes creates alot of job pressure

    Advice to Management

Budget is targeted towards expansion of schools buildings. Capitol outlay is enormous in this respect at the expense of programs and staffing needs it seems.
