I worked at Nexen full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

My experience was primarily based on pre CNOOC takeover. From the perspective of enjoying the work I did, enjoying the people I worked with, the challenge of the job, salary and benefits - Nexen was a great place to work.

    Cons

Some personality conflicts and appearance of disjointed management - too many people making decisions about the same project caused confusion and took expert decision making out of the hands of experts.

    Advice to Management

Clear authorities should be defined and left to people competent to make those decisions

I worked at Nexen full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Prior to the acquisition by CNOOC Ltd., Nexen was a really interesting company to work for. Good salary and benefits, decent career opportunities, and a welcoming environment. My time there was fairly straight forward. I would probably worked there until I hit retirement.

    Cons

After the acquisition, the company seemed to lose its direction, especially in the US. Due to govt. regulations, all US operations were sold and the accompanying employees either shifted to the new companies or laid off. This led to more and more layoffs. Not sure where they are now, but I believe they are still trying to find their way.

    Advice to Management

Figure out what Nexen US is, and communicate that clearly to the staff.

    Pros

9/80 schedule, pay good (due their desperation to keep you), good location.good stepping stone.

    Cons

Too many mid-level managers swinging around their political weight and far removed from the actual work. No support from HR director or Office management team. I watched 80% of the staff here slowly exit throughout my 5 year tenure. I was an excellent employee who started as a temp and moved my way up to a permanent position and three promotions before I realized this was no more than a few stepping stones toward a better career.Office morale in Houston is terrible; no one liked working here and it showed.

    Advice to Management

Practice what you preach. Get rid of dead weight middle managers. Stop the nepotism/favoritism and hold managers accountable for their shortcomings.
