    Cons

Middle management is a disaster. They want to micro manage. The organization is very Political. They are not above bending the rules.

    Advice to Management

Close the offices here and move it all back to China and save a bunch of money.

I worked at Nexen full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Prior to the acquisition by CNOOC Ltd., Nexen was a really interesting company to work for. Good salary and benefits, decent career opportunities, and a welcoming environment. My time there was fairly straight forward. I would probably worked there until I hit retirement.

    Cons

After the acquisition, the company seemed to lose its direction, especially in the US. Due to govt. regulations, all US operations were sold and the accompanying employees either shifted to the new companies or laid off. This led to more and more layoffs. Not sure where they are now, but I believe they are still trying to find their way.

    Advice to Management

Figure out what Nexen US is, and communicate that clearly to the staff.

    Pros

Good work life balance. Definitely the place to be if you have kids or a busy (outside of work)schedule.

    Cons

Strategy shift causing low morale. Buyout by CNOOC still causing uncertainity. Little room for advancement.

I worked at Nexen full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent pay, Nice building, generally well meaning company, but...

    Cons

The US version of this company is kind of on the ropes. Loosing a lot of staff, for a variety of pretty good reasons, and though they are no longer an immediate extension of the canadian way, it still ends up being the default management style.
I dont think it is unfair to say this companies future is definitely a question mark, a previous poster called it a "Bright Future" and I hope for the sake of those who remain that is true, but that was not the consensus opinion of the average individual when I was there.
I would strongly suggest you ask a lot of questions at the interview about staffing, future, scope.
The good news is that all of this bodes well for negotiating your pay. Trust me, they need you, just dont think you are going to retire here.

    Advice to Management

Break out of the Canadian mold, you are carrying a fair amount of dead weight in low level managers who are out of their element.
    Best of luck

    Pros

Small community of people. Easy access to senior regional management. Good location in Houston. Offers two Fridays off per month

    Cons

Very limited opportunity for growth. The company is working on developing a growth strategy for technical roles but there doesn't seem to be any plans for non-technical roles. Could be organized more efficiently and often has poor utilization of people resources.

    Pros

The company offered great shifts, salary and benefits. There was much room for advancement for those who would step up. Global opportunities

    Cons

The company did not take safety seriously. Management allowed many deviations from standards and regulations if it facilitated lower costs and improved production.
