I have been working at Nexen full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Strong financial backing from parent company (however CNOOC is losing patience with Nexen's Canadian operations)
    - Company entered new areas globally and growth is expected (internationally) in the future
    - Compressed work schedule - two Fridays off per month

    Cons

    - Due to lay-offs over last few years only a shell of a company remains. Some floors stand completly empty
    - Western Canadian operations are winding down due to commodity prices and operational issues
    - Limited career growth options. Promotions are based on employee-manager relations rather than merit
    - No pay/benefits increases for a number of years. Employees are not compensated proportionally to their experience level
    - Once competitor (oil and gas) activity increases and industry hiring resumes mass exodus may be expected from junior and intermediate staff
    - Annual reviews are a joke and are designed to promote mediocrity. Rewards for high performance are negligible and recognition is very difficult to get. (Recognition is based on percentage of population receiving certain ranking - which promotes cut throat atmosphere, back stabbing and deceit)
    - Upper management is disconnected from employees. Culture is pushed upon the employees rather than grown within.

    Advice to Management

    - Reassess the company culture. Try to grow culture from bottom up and not shove it down employees throats like it is currently done
    - Replace current end of the year reviews with something which does not rely on binning populations into ranks based on percentages and reward employees on merit
    - Readdress compensation and adjust according to the current experience and role levels

-don't promote from within that often unless you are the chosen few
-most toxic work environment I've ever worked for

I have been working at Nexen full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Used to be good company, some above average benefits

    Cons

Terrible atmosphere, very poor lower management, no benefit increases in years, average industry wages. Very disorganized in 2017, safety gone stupid. HR is a joke, Chinese don't care about Canada operations or employees. Steady decline in Canada operations. Too many old boys still in lower management, with no employee respect

    Advice to Management

Engage communication upwards, listen to employees for procedures and improvements. Lower management stale and needs overhaul if CNOOC has any hopes to be successful. Compensate good employees not listen to scales.
