Pros
If you're hoping to get a start in digital journalism or digital content creation, you could do much worse than Nexstar as your first step. While the company, like so many companies right now, is having some trouble filling positions, the training and support they have in place will help any newcomer build experience. I've been working as a member of the digital news team for three years and the first two of those years it seemed like Nexstar had no real plan to address digital content. All of that has changed over the last year. The company has reorganized its digital content department and put forth a lot of effort to ensure digital newsrooms are trained and have the tools they need to grow their local digital presence. This has helped to improve morale on the digital side and helps quite a bit. Benefits at Nexstar are very good. Employee contributions to the health insurance plan are incredibly inexpensive for the level of coverage offered. This helps make up for lower salaries.
Cons
Like a lot of broadcast news companies, the pay is not terribly high. In addition, if you work in a smaller market you're most likely going to be dealing with an understaffed newsroom. Staffing shortages across the country mean that new graduates are able to bypass small markets for better offers in larger cities.

Pros
Some nexstar stations have management that truly do care. Some stations will give comp time.
Cons
The pay is terrible for how much you work. Some positions are hourly, but they will yell at you for getting overtime when they required it in the first place. If your salary be prepared to work 24 to 36 hour shifts and get called in on your only days off. The station I worked at would give comp time, but make you feel bad for using it. Be ready to work with inexperienced children straight out of school and have the workload of 2 to 3 people because they can't hire anyone to fill positions with how poor the salary is. If you have a family, he ready to rarely see them.

Pros
If you're working in the production department, at least at my station, you experience a very laid back environment outside of shows. You also get a good bit of downtime to yourself outside of broadcasts. You receive solid vacation and sick days. The health insurance is also fairly decent.
Cons
During live broadcasts, you're going to be put under intense stress. Perfection will eventually be expected. You work mid afternoon until evening, so you don't really have time to yourself except on your days off. The corporation treats departments as expendable. The moment they have the money to eliminate positions with things like automated cameras or master control operators, they will.

Pros
At this point in time, they have almost 200 stations nationwide. They are big on promoting within the company and to other stations within the company. You can work in a small market but move your way up to a big market with more money.
Cons
Old fashion in their way of thinking. Many companies of this scale are making progress in giving additional benefit such as more time off and more focus on mental health, flexible work hours, but Nexstar doesn't seem to be making progress. They are still stuck in their Monday - Friday 8 to 5.

Pros
Incredible experience and gear provided
Cons
Horrible pay for experience required. Management is not connected to employees. Multiple decisions made at higher level that negatively effect only bottom of totem pole. No raises or bonuses. Whatever you make on your first day is what you will make 20 years from now. Feeling of being fired or written up for doing anything wrong. Strict way of doing things, no ability to voice ideas or better methods. All in all, feeling of a failing news station. Different cuts to the budget are made weekly, prepare to have to quickly adapt to sudden, unnecessary changes.

Pros
They provided a snack table because they refused to pay us more
Cons
Managers have been best friends for years, nepotism is rampant People gossip, outright bully, and harass others but there are no consequences. HR is useless Managers are burnt out The entry level employees work WAY too hard for NO PAY, if you ask to scale back your workload they will scale back your pay Doing a great job? Not even a thank you. Make one mistake? Your job security is threatened Bare bones training system Absolutely no way to move up Guilted into never using your PTO No promotion of work-life balance
