I have been working at Next Retail part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Shift marketplace makes it good for taking/ giving up shifts. There is also sometimes 'time off available to you' which enables you to start or finish your shift earlier. Managers and staff are extremely helpful and lovely.
    Suitable for people in college

    Cons

Contracted hours can be very short i.e 3 hours, however with the shift marketplace you can pick up shifts easily.
Although I like working in the various departments, i would like to be mainly based at one so I could learn more about it and be able to go that extra mile for the customer. I'm usually based on womens but then when I'm put in menswear I'm not the most knowledgable. Although training is provided I would still like t have one area as my base section to work on.
Also, lunch breaks are extremely short. You have to be working a 5 hour shift just to get a 15 minute break.

    Advice to Management

Understand that people make mistakes and that everyday is a learning day

I have been working at Next Retail part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The staff are what make this job bearable. Without having friends here, I could not work here.
My managers are specifically nice and friendly. They don't intimidate you like some managers do and I feel I'm so lucky to have managers like I have.

    Cons

Management do not care about you! My availability was set so i couldn't work outside of my contract hours and yet I found myself on many occasions being put in for shifts the next day without being asked. When I spoke to a manager they would deny, deny, deny and say I had no option but to work it.
Age difference between staff causes aggression. A few of the older staff members are quite condescending towards as young members, and always tell us we are wrong putting us down. Complain to management about this and they take it no further!
Store manager doesn't know whats happening within the store! I understand the store manager gets the final say, but sometimes a department manager does know what is best.
Lack of training. No training on how to measure someone for a suit, types of mattresses etc. You walk in blind.
Quite often short staffed and customer can get mad at you for this, when in fact it is not your problem.

Teaches you how to work under presure going the extra mile in order to achieve good results everyday. Good management, friendly staff.

    Cons

Staff levels are not great, low wages considering the invested effort.

    Advice to Management

    More careful when recruiting

I have been working at Next Retail part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Gain experience in working with customers, can use skills in interior design on a day to day basis. Have really expanded my skills by doing a range of tasks

    Cons

Pay is very poor, pressure to hit targets that are in fairly based in my opinion. A lot of responsibility for minimum wage. Terrible bonus

I have been working at Next Retail part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lovely team work amongst staff in stockroom even when under pressure. Discount ok, uniform allowance good

    Cons

The bonus system is very unfair. 3 mins to have a toilet break!! Have to account for every minute, if u don't hit 95% efficiency targets they can drag u in for dissaplinary, and threatened with being got rid of. Sometimes less than 10 minutes to open a pallet full of stock. Management don't care about staff, very rarely see the shop manager. All about speed and less about health and safety!! Not enuf staff on shopfloor . Countless complaints off customers not being able to find staff. Definite divide between stockroom and shopfloor staff. Next concentrate far to much on the sale instead of slow and steady sales in my opinion. Far to many cooks and never know if your talking to a supervisor, manager, team leader or team voice. I've worked for next several times and reall enjoyed it - now I will never go back and actually feel like I don't want to buy things there because of how the staff r treated

    Advice to Management

Maybe they should try emptying a pallet in under 10 minutes and see how they get on. Also make their staff feel like they r doing a good job instead of telling them they need to speed up all the time

    Pros

small store so i've been able to work in every department, done an apprenticeship and learnt a lot

    Cons

don't get paid a lot for what you do, senior managers aren't involved a lot

    Advice to Management

treat your staff fairly, very hard to step up if in a small store
