I have been working at Next Retail part-time

    Pros

It is a relatively stress free part time work environment, the shifts are usually relatively flexible around university as can swap with other employees.

    Cons

You do not get paid for breaks. You are not allowed to book any holidays over a two week sale period in the summer and for nearly the whole of december, this is excessive.

    Pros

You meet some great people to work with
Flexible with hours. Can give shifts up or take them. Great if you have kids.
25% staff discount excluding sale items

    Cons

Managers have favourites so not much for progression. It's not about how much work you do, it's about who you know that can advance you!
    Some late shifts involved
    Working boxing day!

    Advice to Management

Praise your staff a little more. A little goes a long way to making your staff feel happy and appreciated to do the work.

I have been working at Next Retail full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - good working environment, always kept busy
    - room for progression, promoted twice within 2 years
    - good rewards for hard work (gift cards, bonus in pay, however not for much longer)
    - lots of extra hours and overtime around busy periods

    Cons

    - company is doing away or trying to cut bonuses for all staff
    - certain 'cliques', disrupts positive working especially as store manager is centre of said clique
    - store manager extremely biased towards different staff, lacks in motivational and people skills, thus making it hard to enjoy working in Next
    - Christmas is taken away from you, lucky to get a day off around 20th-31st December (apart from Xmas day)
    - low rate of pay for the work you're expected to do

    Advice to Management

Give your hard working staff some slack around Christmas time, raise hourly wage and keep bonuses.

    Pros

    Staff discount.
    Generous uniform allowance.
    Met some great people.

    Cons

    Company is extremely corporate.
Sole focus tends to be on cost saving, usually resulting in cut in man hours, poor staffing levels, unrealistic expectation of man power required to complete a job thoroughly.
Usually resulting in commercial/operational procedures not being completed to a high standard, essence is on speed sacrificing quality in work.
Little investment in staff also means, numerous part - time contracts, little engagement , interest and commitment for staff. Poor morale.
Current focus for the company is people, however little focus has been put into staff as always profitability of the business takes priority.

To conclude being a FTSE 100 company Next clearly know how to turnover a huge profit.
However as a business, Next need to reconsider their idea of profitability, invest into people and in turn witness how a business operates with a strongly engaged workforce.

    Advice to Management

Stress of the position and demand form seniors can lead to poor management.
Break the cycle, suggest new ways of thinking, identify & isolate problems instead of working around them.
