I worked at Next Retail full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They paid me on time I guess

    Cons

Terrible management, absolutely no organisation. Nothing ever happened on time, always understaffed, management do not care about anyone else and enjoy doing absolutely nothing all day while the other staff do it for them without recognition. Pay wasn't great, not much above minimum wage. I worked there for nearly 2 years and wasn't offered anything above a 19 hour contract, and despite frequently applying for promotions I never got anywhere despite being good at my job. The people that get promoted are the people the managers are friends with. Hours are cut all the time when the store is quiet (which is most of the time apart from sale when they expect you to work illegal hours with no extra pay). Basically, don't work for Next. It's not worth it.

    Advice to Management

Treat your staff with respect. They do more work than you and have earned it.

    Cons

VERY stressful work enviroment , poor pay - huge expectations , terrible pressure -costant , I Worked for other retailers but never experienced such a huge stress level ,

    Advice to Management

More profesionalism would be welcome , respect your staff you are not better than other workers, start to work instead of bossing people around

I worked at Next Retail part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The staff that work there all work so hard and are lovely despite the conditions they are working in.

    Cons

Management are poor at Rotas, motivating, organising. There is never enough staff on floors and can be one member covering an entire floor at the one time. They treat staff like they are disposable with no support or loyalty.

    Advice to Management

Hire some managers who care about staff and maybe treat the staff in the stores as well as you treat your head office staff.

I have been working at Next Retail part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Flexible shift marketplace where people can pick up shifts
    - Bonus scheme based on mystery shopper reviews
    - 25% store discount
    - Decent student job, but god knows how anybody could live off a job here

    Cons

    - Have to buy own uniform at 75% discount for first £75 over 6 months
    - Shifts can be cut a day in advance
    - No opportunities to progress through management
    - Tiny contracts (e.g. 6 hours) though people are expected to work whenever suits management
    - Pushy customer service model
    - Allowed to specify 'availability' though put in to work regardless so constantly having to rearrange work
    - Minimal complicated sick pay
    - Never know how much you'll get at the end of the month
-If you 'pick up' a shift for more hours your contracted hours are frequently cut
-Bonuses cut (e.g. parcel pick-up bonus slashed with no warning, delivery bonus made harder to achieve)
-Time used to be 1.25 hours between midnight and 6am but that's been cut
    - Pathetic holiday allowance
-No Christmas because all staff required to work Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, frequently starting at 6am
-Irregular and odd shift patterns late at night or very early in the morning
    - Blocked off periods of the year where unable to book holiday.
    - 'Team leaders' take on more responsibility but don't get extra pay
    - No full-time contracts unless management, when people expected to work many more hours beyond 35 for a measly salary
    - Antiquated system, embarrassingly outdated
    - No weekends
    - Blame culture for people taking sick pay
    - Lack of creativity, everything, including displays, have to go through Head Office
    - PCs and tills continually breaking
    - Unpaid breaks
    - 15 minute break if you work a 5 hour shift, 30 minutes if you work 6 or more hours, regardless of whether it's over a mealtime or not
    - Work shifts and 'query' them then frequently don't get paid for it
    - Lose 15 mins pay if 2 mins late

    Advice to Management

    - Full-time contracts
    -Actual staff benefits package
    - Free uniform with reduced allowance
    - Double time on Boxing Day, Xmas eve and new year's day if you insist on making us work then.
    - Further opportunities to progress through company
    - Penalties for cutting shifts
    - Fixed rate bonuses based on performance, because people rely on them.

I worked at Next Retail full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

It is not physically demanding work

    Cons

Working for Next in a call centre is a monotonous, tedious job. You are treated with contempt by the managers as you role within the company is viewed as being rather menial. If you take a day off sick you are threatened
    with the sack.
As has previously been mentioned there is no chance of gaining any sort of promotion.
An awful lot is expected of you, yet the remuneration is derisory.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees as human beings and not robots.
