Decent environment, pay lower than engineering jobs of similar demand

Sep 19, 2022 - Software Development Engineer in Saint Paul, MN

    Business Outlook

    Pros

The environment was professional and well-kept. Performance reviews were structured and well-defined. Expectations were generally managed per-project, and engineers can change projects up to once per year, which is great for those who like to hop around and work on different things.

    Cons

Pay is generally lower than engineering jobs throughout the market. Agile development allows the teams to set their own cadence, but basing an employee's effort off of how many story points' worth of tickets reach the "done" column in each sprint has substantial drawbacks. Not only can it lead to teams fraudulently quoting amount of effort required for things to get done, but also lead associates and juniors to be left behind when on a team dominated by seniors that have differing ideas of how much effort a particular task may take. Promotion roadmaps are more on the subjective side.

    Management doesn’t lead by example

    Pros

Was a great company but has gone down hill through changes in management. New changes are supposedly coming but that seems to be happening very slowly

    Cons

Salary is not competitive, especially for the cost of living. Senior leadership doesn’t value its employees. They ask for feedback and then when I t is given by employees they answer with “if you don’t like it here then leave…we will replace you” Women do not get paid the same as men and are not given the same opportunities men are that are equal performers Lack of respect for employees Lack of flexible work schedule even for those that can do their work remotely Good ole boys feel. The male leaders get away with arrogance and bad behavior. This has led to many employees leaving the company.

IT environment very political - company does not care about retaining good talent

Aug 17, 2022 - IT Manager in Juno Beach, FL
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Decent benefits, stable company (little risk of losing your job because a recession). Some departments and employees are a pleasure to work with, others are a nightmare, it all depends of the manager and director of the area.

    Cons

Very political environment in IT. There are some really nasty and unprofessional people in high positions in IT that came as part of the new management wave that arrived a couple of years ago. Pay way under market for highly skilled IT talent. Company pays a lot of lip service to employee engagement surveys and does not address any of the real issues or concerns, as a result there is high turnover and the best IT talent is leaving in droves.
