I worked at NextFab full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

NextFlab is a great place to unload any spare enthusiasm you may have for making stuff or helping others. This place will hoover up all that excitement, make a blog post about it, and then continue to underpay you. No one enjoys the job for more than a few months. But work is suffering. Get to work!

    Cons

Most people can't afford to participate in the Studios' cool machines or classes, and as an employee, you'll be in a similar position. You may find the desire to drag yourself back in on your free time and run a machine, but you will quickly be interrupted by an inept member who thinks you work there at that second. Also don't attempt to make any money with the cool toys or the COO will demand you sign your company... over to him or lose your job.

    Advice to Management

Stop tweeting about the horrible food and maybe show off the multi-million dollar toy box you've accrued!

    Pros

Incredibly intelligent members with varied backgrounds and outlooks make working at NextFab a great experience. Employees are also some of the best educated and creative people in the area. Classes and skills are free to staff and leadership encourages that everyone be adept with machinery and software.

    Cons

Most incompetent management experience in over 20 years of working across several industries. The amount of dishonesty and mistrust at the top of the company trickles into everything and taints it. Though it's encouraged that staff learn how to use equipment, it's a ruse - not only is it difficult to find time in one's personal life to take the classes, as work days are long and stressful, but the ulterior motive is... not to foster creativity in employees, but to abuse them. Staff with basic knowledge in anything served as supervisors in shops with dangerous equipment because this place is a revolving door and they never have enough employees. Once an individual overcomes the soul-crushing blow that occurs when working there, they leave. Very little room for advancement.

    Advice to Management

Remove the review that you posted on Glassdoor the same day NextFab's profile was claimed. The ex-staff members are talking about it and it's pathetic, though also a testament to how dishonest the "excellent senior management" is. Serve your members, for they are the blood of your organization. Be realistic and run the company like a business, not your hobby.

I have been working at NextFab for more than 5 years

    Pros

NextFab is a great studio to hone your skills at. The amount one can learn from the technical staff is abundant. The chance to learn from the people who have been running high tech machines (cnc routers, 3d printers, lasers, electronics, etc) for years is not able to be found in any other single place. The opportunity the facility gives businesses as a physical co-working space allows the company to be more... successful. Companies no longer have to purchase the machines, facility space or utility bills. They also have the ability to ask NextFab's staff questions when stricken with difficult machining or design issues. NextFab is about the community. One gets out what they put into it. If you are a person that is just in there to do your work and leave, that is what you will see. If you talk to the people around you, one may find themselves with a new project partner. You never know who you are standing next to and what ideas they have. It's a whirl pool of creativity.

    Cons

It is a company that grew quickly in an industry that does not exist. The back end procedures may not always be smooth. There are no guidelines to follow for a company that does this type of work. With that said, they have moved very quickly to fix any issues they have or had.

I have been working at NextFab

    Pros

A great place to meet entrepreneurial people and build a network of friends Helping someone to make their dreams come true, is a rewarding feeling A great first job or internship, to grow a thicker skin

    Cons

Not a good place to build a career. Taking on more responsibility, performing complex tasks with no prior experience, and going above and beyond the job description is expected, but rarely rewarded. Those sacrifices have nothing to do with entrepreneurial and start-up culture of the community, employer’s trust, intent, or company culture, but everything to do with a lack of planning and poor management. Employees... are underpaid, stretched thin, and raises are to be fought for. Everything is set up for employees’ failure, and when it happens, the leadership is so much in denial of what might have caused it, it attempts to punish the employee (sometimes in very unethical ways). Turn over rates are very high. A staff of 20 people fully rotates almost every year. Decisions are arbitrary and everything is a priority. The leadership is progressively disconnected from staff, and all about grandiose expansion.

    I worked at NextFab

    Pros

A great collection of hardware, software and machinery. Members and employees shared common interests and most were very friendly.

    Cons

Poor management and lack of respect for employee's needs and concerns. Too many managers and too little authority given to those actually doing work.

    I worked at NextFab

    Pros

They provide benefits including vacation time, OK health insurance, access to high tech equipment and opportunities to learn new skills. Most of the employees and the membership community are smart, fun and decent human beings.

    Cons

Salary increases come with a fight if at all. You'll have to give up a significant amount of your personal time to achieve any advancement within the company. Criticism falls on deaf ears.
