    Pros

    At Nextag, I get to work with smart people on interesting problems. The upper management has changed recently, and the company has begun to make significant changes (both technical and cultural) in a short period of time.

    Cons

    The San Mateo location is pretty (up on the hill off 92), but dining options are somewhat limited. The company is growing quickly, and quality talent is hard to find these days. It can take a while to bring in new people, even when they're really needed. Also, I could use more vacation time, but that's probably true most places.

    Advice to Management

    Continue to be unafraid to change. Continue treating employees like adults. This isn't my first rodeo, and the role of corporate cheerleader doesn't come naturally to me, but I think this place could really be a rocket ship. For the first time in years, I'm actually excited about a big company.

    Pros

    Nextag sits at a very cool junction in ecommerce, melding products, search, lots and lots of traffic and tons of data. The domain is hip, hyper-competitive and evolving into mobile, social, local and personal. After years as a hard driving start up, the company attracted a top drawer CEO (Jeff Katz, the founding CEO of Orbitz), to help it get to the next level. The company is very profitable and willing to invest in new areas to innovate and grow its footprint. The consequence for employees is that there are many interesting problems to work on and plenty of opportunities to grow a career. There are many very smart people in the company and more are joining. This really is an inflection point in the company's history.

    The best part for engineers is that with the data volumes and level of traffic the site gets, you get exposed to what it takes to build a true high capacity internet site. It's not quite Google or Amazon scale, but it is genuinely in the next class of scale. Hard problems = fun!

    Cons

    The chief con at Nextag is that it has to shake it's reputation for being an unpleasant place to work. If you read the glassdoor reviews pre-2010, they are not flattering and there are significant truths scattered among them . However, you can see how under Jeff Katz's tenure (reflected on glassdoor reviews from ~June 2010 onward), the company has taken major steps towards correcting cultural and structural issues that have dogged the company for years. The challenge for the company is that this outdated reputation inhibits some good people from working here. No one likes an undeserved or outdated reputation...

    If you perform, NexTag absolutely takes care of you.

    Cons

    The company tries to maintain a very low key in offices and watches expenses like a hawk. Many friends don´t know the company.

    Advice to Management

    As the company continues to grow, it may make sense to experiment having folks working on the same project sit togehter, even if they are in different functions.

    Pros

    Decisions are made based on data and objective analysis -- not based on how articulate one is or how good you are at powerpoint. Very little internal politics and a strong emphasis on intellectual integrity.

    Good track record of promoting from within --- Good performance is recognized and salaries are highly competitive. If you have initiative you will be given the chance to take on as much responsibility as you can handle.

    Strong bias towards automating mundane or repetitive tasks to help employees focus on real value-added activities.

    Exceptional financial discipline, both on the cost side and on deciding where to invest. This is mentioned as a negative by a number of other reviewers which seems absurd to me. Isn't that what good businesses are supposed to do? This is why NexTag has outperformed every other comparison shopping site by a wide margin.

    Cons

    Company is too risk averse at times and could do a better job communicating about company priorities and performance across the employee base.

    Management could do a better job giving positive reinforcement to employees for good performance outside of the regular performance appraisal cycle. This is probably due in part to the Pro I mention above regarding promoting from within. NexTag has a lot of first time managers who are learning management skills on the job.

    Advice to Management

    Communicate more with employees about strategy as well as the reasons for company policies. In the absence of information people too often take negative perspectives on things and this could be largely eliminated with better communication. The company is evolving from a very centrally managed company to one with more delegated decision-making and this communication is even more important now.

    Pros

    Laid back, good perks like free food in the kitchen, challenging work, fun coworkers, and good salary compared to other offers I received.

    Cons

    Long hours (10 to 7PM with an hour lunch), sometimes a little bit disorganized...but that's ok considering it's a small company. Very profit centric which is good but stifles creativity a little.

    Advice to Management

    Explain things better to engineers when they ask. A little bit of knowledge goes a long way. Sometimes hard to know what other people in the company are doing.
