I have been working at Ngee Ann Polytechnic full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Flexi working hours, many perks. Employees get to go back on time everyday, non-stressful environment and friendly colleagues

    Cons

Slow learning due to the environment, some staff are not even aware of the fast paced technological advancement out there. And also due to the aging population of staff here.

    Advice to Management

Hire younger colleagues, fresh blood to enter.

    Pros

After school, I can drop by to work.

    Cons

Miscommunication. I wasn't aware that particular need to be done, no one hand over it to me, and it leaves me bad impression. No gratitude after I complete my work.

    Pros

There are variety of activities to engage in with the students or with family. If you are senior staff on old pay scheme, this is a great working environment. There are plenty of work-life balance and light teaching load for this group.

    Cons

The school leadership trusted only the middle management. The middle management likes to form clique and sabotage others. While the middle management are engaging in their activities, the working level received most of the damage. While the school leaders said that they are open to listen to feedback, the feedback will always trickle down to the middle management, which resulted in collateral damage. The school... constantly requires staff to volunteer for students' activities. Although it is opened to all staff to volunteer, only designated staff who volunteered gets the work, others will get the flak from the middle management. These days the management are moving towards designating staff to do activities, rather than discussing with the staff. There are no discussion with the staff on the career progression and direction one would like to head towards. The short meeting/discussion between the staff and the management is leaning towards informing for awareness. The staff could reject during the session, but will still have to do what is set out by the management. Compounding to the problem, the management favours master and PhD holders. Despite the school and MOE is educating the students of higher importance of working experience over paper qualification. Staff without them are at the mercy of those who have. Although the school is always saying they are doing things for the best interest for the students, many times the management are blindly following the rules and regulations rather than really helping the students. Weaker students might not get the help required unless stipulated by the system. Or unless the students are of value to the students, especially students who can represent the school in competition, etc. As the education sector in Singapore is heading towards SkillsFuture, this is adding to the woes of the staff. Every academic staff have to teach in these courses, regardless whether you have the domain in the topic. On top of lacking in domain knowledge, staff are not paid as this is part of your work scope. Timetable scheduling might not be optimised due to special requirements from the senior staff. You could be teaching night classes today, and have 8am class the next morning. While NP is looking at reducing the headcount on yearly basis for the coming years, this make the situation worst as staff are more inclined to spend the least amount of time on the students in their academics, and more towards other highly valued activities by the management.

    Advice to Management

Trust the staff engagement survey, they reflect what is the sentiments on the ground. Hiring people that can fit into the culture just implies that the management have lost touch with the core values, big-hearted, respect, responsibility, resilient, integrity, compassion, gratitude . The values this poly is trying cultivate in the students. Trusting solely the middle management is splitting the school apart. Need... to trust your ground staff and stop favouritism. Appraisal is often played by the middle management and the senior management. Your ground staff are aware of what you are doing. All your staff are good and have their strengths. The senior management need to create psychological safety for every staff, not only the middle managers. Have structure and clarity in everyone's role and every activities. Not assigning one task at a time to the staff. This is a career, not soldiers receiving orders. And engage and depend on all your staff, not just the middle managers. The school is very self centred now. The industry might have a less than ideal culture, but the school should never reference the lesser than average, as it will only make your culture deteriorate.
