I worked at NiSource full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Employee Engagement
    -Family Atmosphere
    -Career Development

    Cons

    -Too much bureaucracy
-Pay doesn't increase proportionally with experience, in order to get a raise you have to leave
-to much focus on making all the states the same when they operate in completely different environments
-At the end of the day you are just a number to the company and would rather replace you with a cheaper less experienced person, then pay an employee with 5 years of experience appropriately

    Advice to Management

Look around at what the other local utilities and pay your employees according to their value.

I worked at NiSource as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent compensation, Company Car, gas card. I worked with some great people at NiSource but found many of them hated it there and secretly wanted to quit.

    Cons

The workforce at NiSource is old and aging fast. The average age of my team was in mid to high 50s. If you haven't been there for 20 years expect very little respect. Very corporate, lots of layers of bureaucracy, no job security, routinely thrown under the bus by NiSource employees. Contractors have no rights with NiSource and can't even file HR grievances. A lot of employees at NiSource see contractors as ripe for abuse.

    Advice to Management

If you're making enough money to refresh very expensive, not necessary, network equipment every 3 years (like those useless Telepresences that could be replaced with a webcam and a Skype account) and can afford lavish catering for your executives everyday for lunch on the 6th floor at Arena why can't you afford to hire an IT staff and offer benefits?

    Loyalty to the organization

    Cons

    No work life balance
    Lack of strategic leadership
    Archaic technology

    Advice to Management

Focus on the customer and get those out of leadership who have been there forever and have no desire to do what's needed to deliver on the strategy.

I worked at NiSource full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good Vacation, Good Benefits, seems like you can move around a lot in the Company if you wish. Pretty good Pay.
They promote Teamwork and will do a lot to allow employees to get to know each other even if you work in other offices. It seemed like they had good training.

    Cons

It seems if you aren't a corporate robot you won't last here. You are just a number and they don't care at all about your personal life. I had some awful things happen in my personal life in a very short time. I slept in a couple times due to extreme stress and insomnia, and they terminated me.

I can maybe understand if I was a very young entry level employee, but I was a professional for almost 10 years with no employment gaps and had glowing recommendations from old bosses during my interview process.
It taught me a lesson though, if you work for a big corporation you are just a number in the system.

    Advice to Management

Employees aren't just numbers in the computer

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

    * Executives are very approachable
    * Contributions and opinions are supported and used from the lowest analyst level - great opportunity to get really good experience

    Cons

    * If you are not a white male, you are not going to be promoted
    * Management expects you to work like a dog with minimal rewards
    * Bonus structure not like that of a typical energy company - and they never reward bonuses at full percentage potential
    * Healthcare is extremely expensive ... actually more than you would pay if you were independent
    * HR department is a flat out joke. They don't believe in anonymity and nothing is a secret.

    Advice to Management

Don't be so shortsighted on advancement. There are not women in vice president roles and minimal director-level positions for a reason. Why promote a man who takes credit for the work that their women mangers and directors do?
