I worked at Nomura America full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Ability to leverage global network
    Solid fringe benefits
    Unconventional career development opportunities

    Cons

Japanese corporate structure can be difficult to navigate
    Compensation structure opaque at times
    Complicated reporting lines proved burdensome

I worked at Nomura America (Less than a year)

    Pros

Amazing people ready to invest in you, HR activities keep things interesting, great industry exposure, constant opportunities to connect with everyone at different levels including MDs of different departments, deal based work keeps work exciting, work/life balance

    Cons

Not too many people in the young age group, not a lot of corporate bonding, this role attracts those looking for a work/life balance/stability. Not ideal for young graduates looking for a fast paced culture + social life tied to work.

I worked at Nomura America full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A small investment bank covering all asset classes, so a great place to learn. A lot of work to be done and as the team is small, so creates a lot of opportunities compared to mega banks.

Probably the best benefits among all investment banks, very nice office facilities.

    Cons

As a small investment bank seems to find it hard to make money. That results in significant lay-offs as management tries to tune the strategy. However that is true for most banks.

Having said that, in some areas of Global Markets Nomura has established itself well and is generally well respected by clients.

    Advice to Management

Higher level of interaction with rank and file by senior management would be good.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Nomura America full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great work life balance.
Bonus is better than most shops on the street.
    Great benefits as well.
Work is not as intense, but depends which portfolio you work under.
Some colleagues are smart and helpful

    Cons

    Low morale among collegues.
    High turnover in Audit
Since its a non-regulated bank, audit function is weak and has a poor reputation within the firm.
Its a dead end function if you want to end your career, esp as an auditor.

    Advice to Management

MD of the audit function is unqualified to run the department. He is more concerned with what time you get in and what time you leave. Hire more qualified people in upper management who are actually smart and can be respected.

    Pros

Its a company where people will not stop you from learning more or doing more
It pays good cash bonus if you are a good performer.
    Ethics and professionalism are valued

    Cons

    Slow growth, tenure matters
Strategy of the firm is not clear. First needs to invest more in increasing clientele and getting more into algo trading

    Advice to Management

Identify people who are commited and grow them
Make sure America employees get interaction with Japanese management(this would drive culture)
