I worked at Norbord full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I left in 2009 after 18 years there. Very nice company to work for. Usually strategic in their planning. Treat employees respectfully and have decent benefit plan. Generally a nice team atmosphere.

    Cons

Sometimes allow product quality to slide. Manufacturing management is often loathe to listen to sales management about the need to improve. Coordination amongst the sites regarding consistency of product was lacking.

    Advice to Management

Have similar production quality policies and standards at each plant location.

    Pros

Great company, good pay, nice management staff and good people work there. Good benefits including vacation

    Cons

Hot working conditions, very dirty (as can be expected), hard work but good work. A lot of politics in certain situations

    Advice to Management

You should really consider removing the rule about close relatives working together as you miss many opportunities for great employees, some of the best employees at these mills are summer temps that would love to get into the shop or on process for good pay but cannot due to their parent/parents working there. Poor business decision.

    Cons

Upper Management had a big problem and alot of people left because of the GM.

    Advice to Management

EVERYONE SHOULD BE CERTIFIED IN CPR ON THE JOB.

    Pros

Norbord has a very competitive benefits plan, they offer good time off policy as well, if you work in the mill you just have to find someone to cover for you, much like the hospital industry, this business runs 24/7. They offer competitive pay as well and have realistic expectations and know what the focus needs to be on.

    Cons

The working conditions for the mill workers is tough, they have hot summers and the work as mentioned is 24/7, with the nature of the business that can be tough for some to adjust to.

    Advice to Management

Realize that in order to get excellence, you have to have some flexibility with the mill workers and they need to continue to feel valued, so it is good to spend time in the mill talking to the people, not just walking around looking at things. It appears they are really trying to improve relations at this company

    Pros

They treat employees with respect, deadlines are reasonable, benefits are good, compensation is competitive, people there are tenured which indicates little turnover.

    Cons

Lack of communication in assignments, change is bad, oftern people scatter when something goes wrong, not a lot of leadership in assigning projects.

    Advice to Management

Instill proactiveness and continuous improvement for all its salaried employees, have the corporate office communicate more with the mills, diffuse the turf mentality within the mills.
