I worked at Nordstrom full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Beautiful store, well taken care of by brand executive, low turnover, good commission structure, lots of room to move around and grow w Nordstrom.

    Cons

Super clique-y environment, experience and maturity is frowned upon, friendship with co-workers more important than performance. Department management encourages cattiness. Leaders coach as if they're reading a training manual which is insulting to tenured staff.

I have been working at Nordstrom part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefit for part-time including PTO, 401K and holiday pay. Commission based. You'll make more money verses getting paid hourly. Flexible hours, decent discount.

    Cons

Returns can exceed fifty percent. Because of their liberal return policy, it often hurts the salesperson's bottom line. Managers are often inexperienced and not very hands-on.

    Advice to Management

Use a stricter return policy that has less affect on the salesperson's commission.

I worked at Nordstrom part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Nordstrom takes pride in having a strong HR department, and their staff at Chicago's Michigan Ave location are very approachable and helpful.

The several managers and chefs I worked for in the Nordstrom Cafe took great pride in providing their customers the best dining experience possible.

It was a light-hearted working environment and most everyone on the restaurant's staff were team players.

    Cons

Unfortunately, some of the most disrespectful clientele at Nordstrom's restaurant were their other employees. Retail staff and managers of other departments felt entitled with their employee discount in the restaurant, and often showed no appreciation for their fellow Nordstrom employees. We were on a sales floor too, just selling food instead of clothes.

    Advice to Management

Try to teach your sales staff to respect EVERYONE that works under the Nordstrom umbrella, not just your fellow sellers and managers.

I have been working at Nordstrom full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Company interactions and customer service

    Cons

salary will be heavily based on traffic as in all sales. When its good its great and when its bad its bad. Inconsistent pay.

    Advice to Management

Review return policy to disable customers from treating store as a rental service.

Former Employee - Retail Sales Associate in Chicago, IL

    Pros

Managers have open-door policy. You really learn to provide excellent customer service.

    Cons

Catty coworkers who tried to throw you under the bus (even for things you never did) & who went to great lengths to try to steal customers. Longer hours than usual. Discount was only 20% for regular employees (33% for managers). Fake environment. I have friends who work in retail and I feel like their companies treat them much better in terms of pay and hours.

    Advice to Management

Too high of expectations, especially for pay, not enough appreciation for employees.
