I have been working at Nordstrom full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits, good company culture, lots of really wonderful people. Definitely the best company to join if you're going to work retail. Nordstrom is not going anywhere anytime soon, and it's very easy to get a foot in the door during holidays.

    Cons

Hours are horrible; that's the nature of retail. But somehow, you will NEVER have a consistent schedule unless you're part time. Even in management, you're expected to be very flexible.

The company has done a great job incorporating online sales to keep itself competitive, but it's been to the detriment of a lot of in-store employees. Sales aren't as good for salespeople, and many support employees are really supporting online when they expect to prioritize the store. Often the job isn't quite what you signed up for.

Also, it's a big, corporate company. If you're not commission, your paycheck is determined by someone in Seattle who doesn't know you or your performance, and they never will. I work in the #2 volume store in the company, and I'm on the same pay scale as someone from the smallest store. It's just one of those big ole corporate monsters. Decisions are often made from corporate that don't always make sense for our store, but we have no say in the matter.

    Advice to Management

Find ways to compensate salespeople for aiding online business. Better understand a store and the employees in it (not just management) before making big decisions that affect the store's day-to-day.

I have been working at Nordstrom part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

It is a way to get your foot in the door, it's meaningful work, fantastic atmosphere, Nordstrom hires from within so it's a start.

    Cons

The pay is low, unless you have prior experience. It's a lot of cleaning because house keeping doesn't do much. You're feet will hurt after a long day.

    Advice to Management

Give more praise and acknowledge hard work.

I have been working at Nordstrom full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Full time hours, 20% discount and larger discount during Christmas, full lunch hour, great lunch room/break room, getting to know the clothing and about fashion, no working on Christmas or Thanksgiving.

    Cons

Commission, some employees will steal customers, you're always on edge trying to make a sale, you need to do other things than sell so sometimes your manager will ask you to clean something but then your loosing money. Hours are always different it's hard to make plans and do work if you work so many random hours throughout the week a 9-5 is easier to control your work/life balance.

    Advice to Management

Let the sales associates focus on sales for the day and the managers should not sell since they get paid salary because their taking sales from sales associates.

The employees are very helpful and it's nice location. The discount is awesome!

    Cons

You will get sent home early if there wasn't anything to be done.

I worked at Nordstrom as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

The company has great perks and the employees all really love what they do. If you are good at sales you can easily get promoted and work your way up.

    Cons

The biggest downside is if you are not good at sales it's hard to move up in the company. They believe everyone should start on the sales floor and work your way up to management. While I agree you should be a good seller to be a good manager, to get into even higher, or different, roles you still need to start as a sales person.

I have been working at Nordstrom part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The company does a great job being able to connect with an individual employee and addressing their needs. The HR department is a great support aspect which is in every place of employment. With the HR department being in every store, it allows employees to be able to contact or address a certain need without any obstacles. Also all upper level management aims to know each employee by name and does a great job at it. One more great aspect of this company is that it really values every culture and value that the diverse employees brings to the company

    Cons

One of the downsides with this company is that the pay you receive will always be different from pay period to pay period, since the sales positions are commission driven. However, this allows an employee to control what their earnings will be and to drive their own business.

I really can't think of much else Nordstrom is a great company to work for. It can be hard to get promoted.

I worked at Nordstrom part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Fast-paced work that makes the work days go by quickly, nice work environment, supportive staff and management, good seasonal job

    Cons

Very early hours especially during big sales (sometime 4am-1pm shifts are necessary), long days on your feet, work can sometimes get monotonous, not much of an opportunity for advancement

    Advice to Management

Encourage a better relationship between floor salespeople and members of the logistics team: there were times when salespeople felt their commission was threatened by members of the logistics team that were trying to fulfill online orders with merchandise that they could have otherwise sold.
