I worked at Nordstrom full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good opportunity to learn about the daily grinds of the retail industry.

    Cons

Early-bird schedule only. No real strategy in regards to inventory / organization of fixtures.

    Advice to Management

Make sure employees have a clear understanding of why they're working on certain projects. Enforce department managers to assist Logistics department with their own displays/moves/set-ups.

I worked at Nordstrom (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great discounts that you know about before made known to public. Get to work with fun merchandise on a daily basis. Great product knowledge classes

    Cons

Poor return policy hinders your commission. Commission based position. Most of the time management does not do much during customer issues.

    Advice to Management

Be more available during customer issues, specifically fraudulent returns. Communicate more with buyers to make product available for customers

    Pros

    Great experience
    Great exposure to brands
Ability to impact and grow people
Ability to do many things within the company

    Cons

    Work a lot of hours

    Micromanage
    Workplace politics
    Dirty workplace

    Advice to Management

Need to be able to trust people and help guide them if and when needed. Everyone should be able to collaborate instead of arguing. Management should be consistent in the message it's trying to get across instead of changing the end goal each day.

    Pros

Benchmark of service thus great learning experience. Was a useful segway into sales.

    Cons

Managers come and go often. Basic cons to any sales associate retail position of long hours and on feet all day

    Advice to Management

    Consistency and care is key.

I worked at Nordstrom part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Health insurance for all full-time employees, flexible schedule, employee discounts, 401k even for part time employees, paid training, plenty of breaks, above average pay

    Cons

Management can be a little overbearing, it gets busy during the holidays, some of the rules they have are a little much,

I worked at Nordstrom as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    -Great environment
    -Learn the company's culture
    - Gain hands on experience
    - Great pay!
    - You will meet a lot of people in the industry and learn what kind of career you want and learn what you may not want
    - Discount at Nordstrom, Rack, eBar, Restaurants, Haute Look and Trunk Club

    Cons

Some of the downsides include long hours and often a lot of overtime. But that is normal for any retail job. Also I was looking for more of a job at their headquarters in Seattle, but for many of the jobs you must manage a high volume department before you are considered. Even if you have experience at the job, they like you to know their culture before you work at their headquarters. Which isn't the case for other corporate offices.

Former Employee - Seasonal Cashier in Chicago, IL

I worked at Nordstrom part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

It's a great place to work because it has a great diversity of people. So many different perspectives and stories people have to tell

    Cons

If you're a salesperson, watch out for people stealing the commission on your sales. But I guess that is probably an issue with any retail store based on commission.
You don't get to control your work schedule, and sometimes you have to stay really late during sales season
