I have been working at Nordstrom (Less than a year)

    Pros

Friendly work environment created by a company who genuinely believes in investing in their employees is a great way to create loyalty in business.

    Cons

Compensation in the retail environment is always a bit challenging. Although, pay is something that is always talked about, the title of this position unfortunately is not compensated fairly.

    Advice to Management

Invest more money in the people who are helping your people.

I have been working at Nordstrom full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

+ Decent pay, better than most retail
    + Benefits (401K, Medical, Dental)
+ Challenging environment with lots of opportunity to grow

    Cons

    - Retail hours (nights, weekends, some holidays, overtime)
    - Promotion may require a hefty commute/moving
    - Difficult to retain employees and can feel like a waste of time investing in training them

    Advice to Management

+ Continue to improve bottom up communication to disseminate important information
+ Reconsider traditional "policy" of not promoting on the same selling floor (seller to assistant to manager in the same store)
+ Time to reevaluate sales commission rates for certain departments (i.e. Hosiery, Women's Active)

    Pros

-commission based: pushes you to learn how to execute strategy successfully in sales as you get out what you put in
-nordstrom brand: having a strong brand name like Nordstrom and the connotations associated with it makes it much easier to be a successful salesperson
-management: as a salesperson, my managers (I worked under two different managers throughout my time at Nordy's) would definitely push me to utilize strategies for up-selling and working with difficult clients however they were very understanding of situations that were not in my control and would praise me for the extra work I put in to fulfill the Nordstrom standard--going above and beyond to satisfy the customer

    Cons

What's not understood by some people, you are probably going to have to work weekends (you'll want this more often than not in the future) which makes sense as everyone is not working and has time to go shopping then.

Middle management can bog down on you regardless of the situations at hand and can push you to sign people up for accounts (not a bad thing) to the point of interfering with your sales. However it is not uncommon to see even middle management getting down and dirty with the salespeople when needed.

    Advice to Management

Remember to be realistic with your salespeople: asking every customer about signing up for a Nordstrom card isn't bad, but don't push it to the point of interfering with sales. Also keep up the understanding of difficult situations. Overall I have no complaints, this was the best experience I could have asked for, trying to get sales experience as a college student.

I worked at Nordstrom full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great money, great coworkers (for the most part), flexible schedule once you get on the managers good side and do well at your job, lots of opportunity for growth--they're very interested in hiring within the company and hiring young people to move up quickly

    Cons

Long shifts, low commission rate in some departments compared to others, management changes often so you have to be good at self management and be able to deal with many different kinds of management styles

I worked at Nordstrom full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

very competitive environment and motivate you to sell more. no limits of how much you can make. No boring routine days where every day is the same, here every day is different

    Cons

return policy sucks, every time somebody return anything even if it is worn for a max of one year you still get hit for it and get deducted form your commission. The slow time in January and August is very challenging and very stressful as you don't have a fixed pay, and your paycheck will drop significantly. Your benefits wont start till six month after working as a full time and is hard to maintain as it is linked to your amount of working hours.
