I have been working at Nordstrom full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Family-like feeling within certain stores, opportunities for growth within the company, and a great open door policy to speak with ANY one (including Blake Nordstrom himself!) Great values and culture within the entire company.

    Cons

WORK/LIFE BALANCE IS KEY TO HAVING HEALTHY AND HAPPY EMPLOYEES!
Certain "managers" are promoted WAY too quickly. Just because you may have great business DOES NOT make you a great manager (and vice versa). Although you can work your way down the reverse pyramid with tenacity and hard work, it is not in a very timely manner. Longterm goals into getting into corporate are nearly intangible and Nordstrom is now hiring corporate employees OUTSIDE the company (though they say they only promote within). There are numerous in-store employees fighting tooth and nail to get into a corporate position while corporate bigwigs aren't looking in stores to find their next Buyer (for example) but posting those job positions on websites like LinkedIn and Indeed. Working on valuing employees could very much help with the poor employee retention.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your assistant managers and sales team and ask them for their opinions BEFORE promoting a Department Manager (or any type of manager) to a higher role. Not everyone may be ready to be in an elevated role, even if they are having an increase in their business.

    Pros

Management is generally good with employees although I think my experience was not that good. I first started here in December of 2015, and I was terminated in October of 2016. My first 3 months were good with mens clothing manager at a different store, then I transferred to a different store, also had a very good manager. at the end of may he transferred and another assistant manager from a different department was promoted to the manager position in my department. I was in a car accident right when he was promoted so I let the store know I would not be able to come in for 3 or 4 days. Right off the bat when i came back in he nearly fired me, my face was messed up and I could barely move my neck and back. He also fired the whole team from the previous manager, besides maybe 2 or 3, but they left anyways. He hired so many employees our commissions were extremely low. He also fired me over a snapchat picture of me drinking and said I was drunk. I know he doesn't speak for the whole company but i did not have the most pleasant experience. Also pay isnt the greatest honestly. I made 20,000 in 10 months at a high volume store and high volume department (mens shoes) I was full time. Also i was one of the highest in $ sold in my department. I work for a different company now with much better compensation but if you need a job to pay for your school or apartment, this job would still do good as it did for me.

    Cons

management can be very strict, It's also VERY political. If your manager doesn't like you, he or she WILL fire you. I also think its pretty impossible to move up here. I was with the company for 10 months, had the highest sold in my department, and still would not have been recommended for a assistant manager position.

    Pros

Best reasons to work are the benefits available with Nordstrom, opportunity to get experience with numerous department merchandises, interaction with employees at all levels in-store and in the company.

    Advice to Management
