    Pros

Good pay as far as retail goes. Prestigious. Upward mobility possible. Some perks for managers. Many different locations and fields of work.

    Cons

Hours could be much better, poor training for new employees. Over work/takes advantage of employees during holiday season and during sales.

    Advice to Management

    Value your employees! Clothing allowance

I have been working at Nordstrom full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Family-like feeling within certain stores, opportunities for growth within the company, and a great open door policy to speak with ANY one (including Blake Nordstrom himself!) Great values and culture within the entire company.

    Cons

WORK/LIFE BALANCE IS KEY TO HAVING HEALTHY AND HAPPY EMPLOYEES!
Certain "managers" are promoted WAY too quickly. Just because you may have great business DOES NOT make you a great manager (and vice versa). Although you can work your way down the reverse pyramid with tenacity and hard work, it is not in a very timely manner. Longterm goals into getting into corporate are nearly intangible and Nordstrom is now hiring corporate employees OUTSIDE the company (though they say they only promote within). There are numerous in-store employees fighting tooth and nail to get into a corporate position while corporate bigwigs aren't looking in stores to find their next Buyer (for example) but posting those job positions on websites like LinkedIn and Indeed. Working on valuing employees could very much help with the poor employee retention.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your assistant managers and sales team and ask them for their opinions BEFORE promoting a Department Manager (or any type of manager) to a higher role. Not everyone may be ready to be in an elevated role, even if they are having an increase in their business.

I have been working at Nordstrom full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Consistently on top places to work for lists, ability to be a fashion authority and influence style, fast-paced environment, potential for long term career, commission based environment can allow for larger paycheck, generous employee discount

    Cons

Hard to have a work/life balance, roles keep getting consolidated so more responsibility is placed on managers, only top performers receive recognition even though others are working just as hard if not harder, when you ask for help there is a stigma and resentment

    Advice to Management

Be more empathetic to all that goes on in our day-to-day business. Spend a week on the floor seeing every little thing we have to deal with and realize how much we actually do and support us instead of criticizing us.

I worked at Nordstrom full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Business management experience, in a fashion forward environment

    Cons

varied schedule with lots of late hours, experience entirely dependent on direct manager's support, many managers in roles with lack of experience working with individuals and without ongoing training. High pressure goals for non-competitive wages.

    Advice to Management

More pressure and guidance for those leading large teams with constant education when the roles become larger. Make compensation relative and competitive when asking employees to reach elevated goals and creating urgency and ultimately stress.
