I worked at Nordstrom full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great company to work for. There are many opportunities for growth. They value their employees. It is a fast paced environment, so there is never a dull moment.

    Cons

Being in Department Management at Nordstrom comes with a lot of stress. There is reporting for every metric and managers are responsible for making their numbers. It is especially tough to make sales figures in a brick-and-mortar store when there is so much online competition.

    Advice to Management

I felt like Management was always trying to cut costs. They would constantly restructure or consolidate positions. Those who still had their position ended up having much more on there plate without much of a pay increase.

I worked at Nordstrom full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Promote from within, great benefits, fun culture

    Cons

Favoritism, long hours, very little work/life balance

    Advice to Management

Remember that your people are your biggest asset and people leave managers, not companies. Store managers who do not uphold the company values or exhibit favoritism amongst their Department Managers do nothing to further the Nordstrom brand or name.

    Pros

What keeps you there for as long as we stay, is there are solid goals and action plans- there is a strong support system who will help ensure you succeed.
It feels like a family working here, most employees take care of each other.

    Cons

Development of leadership and sales people-- seems to be lacking focus from upper leadership, with a decline in these development programs.

I worked at Nordstrom full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits available to both hourly and salaried employees; Occasional freebies; Enforces company policy in regard to zero sexual harassment and respectful treatment of employees toward each other

    Cons

Unreasonable working hours at times (ex: employees have to work overnight to do inventory twice a year and then often stay to work the day shift with no sleep); Coercion of employees to donate partial salary to company-sponsored charity; Unequal pay standards between departments

    Advice to Management

To the corporate office: If you want to donate money, let it come from the corporate office instead of from employees who are barely paying bills with their paychecks, as it is. Also, employees who work late into the night should not be required to work the next day, and department/store managers who schedule them thus need to be strongly disciplined. I was a department manager, not an employee, and I never treated the staff in my department that way. Lastly, all Nordstrom staff should be treated equally, instead of holding sales staff, support staff, and service staff to different standards.

    I worked at Nordstrom full-time

    Pros

    Employee discount, good health benefits/401k

    Cons

Lots of favoritism and politics. Hard work and long hours are not recognized or appreciated. No work/life balance. Employees and assistant managers are paid overtime if they exceed 40 hours a week, but managers can work up to 60 hours a week and not get any extra pay or recognition for it. The only thing that matters is numbers; you can get "manager of the month" one month if you have an increase, and a couple months later be let go. Company is constantly restructuring, combining departments, and now starting to close stores. Job security at this company is a joke.

    Advice to Management

Stop playing favorites, recognize your DMs that work really hard and pour their heart and soul into their work, as much as you recognize the salespeople that do.

I worked at Nordstrom full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Career building, professionalism, ability to travel the country

    Cons

No life (no holidays, no weekends, no family time), hard to move up if you don't move around the country for opportunities
