I worked at Nordstrom full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Most people are great to work with, although morale was pretty low right before I left. It was easy to move up if you were on the sales floor and it was very easy to achieve sales goals. Management was very encouraging if you expressed a desire to move up.

    Cons

Company eliminated numerous upper support roles, causing most in those roles to be stagnant in regards to upward movement. Management expressed favoritism when promoting. LOTS of gossip that it almost felt like being in high school.

    Advice to Management

Promote people based on merit, not on friendships.

I have been working at Nordstrom (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The restaurant division operates as a separate entity from the rest of the store so this review is specific to them. Overall solid experience, they promote from within, great benefits (especially for a restaurant job) and you feel the support of the big company behind you.

    Cons

Upper management needs to realize that they are in the mid-level restaurant chain business. They should probably relax a bit as the culture that trickles down from above isn't always very comfortable for hourly employees.

    Advice to Management

Remember happy, empowered employees will always be the best workers. Also, in our menu offerings and styles of service, recognize that catering to the baby boomers has gotten you this far but how effectively you transition to serving the next generation will determine your future as a company.
