I have been working at Nordstrom full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Most of the customers are very nice, if you are good at sales they will work to give you the schedule you want, if you work enough hours to qualify for benefits, they are good.

    Cons

It seems that greediness is rewarded and it hard to have a cohesive team when people are constantly fighting for sales including some managers. They often overstaff the floor which makes it worse.

    Advice to Management

Hire professional individuals who don't look like they rolled out of bed and came to work. Don't be petty about sales and hold your people accountable for their actions.

    Pros

They really give you the freedom to make executive decisions to make your customers happy... which makes your life so much easier!

    Cons

The job comes with the common pitfalls of working for a large corporation. There always seem to be many hoops to jump through and a very large administrative structure.

    Pros

Managers give you the flexibility and trust to let you do your job - no micro managing. Ability to try out new things in the company. Promote from within is strong. Good work life balance.

    Cons

Lack of clarity, lots of ambiguity. Under compensated compared to market. Seems to be a disconnect from leadership to employees.

    Pros

great people. solid benefits, good bonus plan, good work/life balance

    Cons

Unless you are working in private label you will be working with virtually all your peers who have never worked for another company. Outside experience is not recognized or understood. Climbing corporate ladder VERY difficult if you are not a life time employee of the company.

    Advice to Management

Be willing to consider and understand talent and experience that people from outside organizations can bring to the company and consider promoting them

I have been working at Nordstrom full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits available, flexible work schedule (management willing to work around school schedule), overall good experiences with co-workers. Good open-door policy where management will listen to just about anything.

    Cons

Commission sales is extremely unpredictable, there can be a $2000 difference between paychecks depending on your sales/time of year. People are put into management too soon and are underqualified to run departments.
