I have been working at Nordstrom part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

This is a really good company to work for because it promotes from with in. It is easy to move up within the company and make more money.

    Cons

When moving up with the company sometimes you get sucked in to the job. Your life becomes the job and you do not have time for anything else. Definitely have to learn how to balance the both of them.

I worked at Nordstrom full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Nordstrom has a pretty good company culture and overall attitude. For the most part the staff and management are very helpful and supportive. They do truly want you to succeed as a sales person.

    Cons

It varies by location I'm sure, but it was incredibly tough to make decent money in my department. As a salon and designer shoes salesperson, it was difficult to keep your head above water. You are constantly fighting against returns. Your competition in terms of other options for places to shop was brutal. Nordstrom is surrounded by boutiques and designers, then theres Saks, Barneys, Neiman Marcus all within walking distance and our selection in comparison was terrible. Then you have all the credit card thieves running their ring constantly buying shoes and taking up all your sales time only to return them for cash the next day. Since then they have changed the policy to combat this, but for months corporate just stood by and let us facilitate credit card fraud and money laundering.

    Advice to Management

You might as well get rid of the Salon Shoe department in San Francisco.

Cattiness and gossip among female employees, and store managers can be difficult at times. Hard to move up unless you are in favor with the manger. Everyone works hard, but management plays favorites.

I worked at Nordstrom full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Gave me a great platform to meet people and refine my people skills. Most of the people I worked with were awesome. There are opportunities for growth and management, if you want it. I loved their value system. They really promote treating customers like people, to be kind and courteous, etc...

    Cons

Retail life is not the life for me. I didn't like working nights/weekends/holidays. You have to work 1000 hours before any benefits kick in. The discount isn't nearly as good as other places I've worked and they usually do special employee discounts the week before new items come out. What's the point? The biggest con, though is that business is getting taken over by online shopping. Fewer people are going into the stores to buy, which hurts employees.

    Advice to Management

up the employee discount. Give employees more reason to spend their money at the place they work.
