I worked at Nordstrom (More than 8 years)

    Pros

If you want a job that will keep you on your feet, active, and engaged with people this is a great company. Great pay, opportunities to advance, generally very nice managers and co-workers. I felt very encouraged and supported to give the best customer service possible.

    Cons

Almost all of the people who have worked in the shoes department for over 10 years had deteriorating legs and backs. Running up and down the stairs all day really take it's toll on your body after a while. If you have a family this may be a difficult job to work as the hours can be all over the place.

    Advice to Management

Stay on the floor, the best managers I ever had were those that were involved and engaged with the actual pace of the sales floor. They knew their team well and coached often. Most were fantastic. The least effective managers were those that were known to sit in the back and use their computer whenever it got slow.

I worked at Nordstrom part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great place if you're very social. Days are as satisfying as the number of customers you make happy. Employee discount. Sell more, make more.

    Cons

Only profitable in high-volume stores. The schedule can get erratic. Some drama between workers.

    Advice to Management

Balance employee shedules better so that light days are not over-staffed.

I worked at Nordstrom (More than a year)

    Pros

The employees are great and so are the customers.

    Cons

Some locations receive better stock then others which in turn is a catch-22 with sales which leads to less inventory at said store.

Managers have too much power over employees, they can block the highest earners from switching departments to make a better living for themselves. If they decide they dont like you, they can block promotions and moves to better stores as well. The numbers should speak for themselves.

I have been working at Nordstrom full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The pay is very competitive. They offer a great base salary (compared to other stores) plus commissions.
Employee discount at Nordstrom stores it's also good.

    Cons

    Sales:
They put so much pressure on you about numbers and sales. I've been working 6 months, applied for 4 other positions looking to grow in the company and they prefer to bring people from other stores instead of giving the opportunity to somebody that is there already and knows how to do it. You can have all the qualifications, but maybe you have to improve a little on your numbers and they won't consider you for any position.
Hours: they promised X amount of hours and they didn't keep to their promise.
    Management:
The company has a really good vision but it's really sad that only a few part of the managers apply everything to their jobs.

    Advice to Management

Be more pro employee, treat your employees better and you are going to have better results.

I worked at Nordstrom full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Generous salary and generous raises (I received a 19% raise after 6 months). I enjoyed working with the managers very much.

    Cons

The pressure to pre-sell products for arbitrary events is relentless, and I truly believe it confuses and alienates customers.

    Advice to Management

Customers do not like getting calls from Nordstrom employees every month trying to sell them something. We need to take it down several notches.

I worked at Nordstrom part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very flexible to work with, although I was in a specific retail job, I felt a sense of freedom selling from different departments and getting to know employees in different fields.

    Cons

There was sometimes drama among Co Workers, only among the older ones. The younger ones kept their head down.
