I worked at Norfolk Southern full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The coworkers that I worked with made going to work enjoyable.

    Cons

Every time a new shop manager would get hired, he would stir up the hornets nest by abolishing jobs, and making new rules to make a name for themselves. There's no work to life balance.

    Advice to Management

Take care of your workers and they will take care of you and your numbers.

I worked at Norfolk Southern (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay, retirement, benefits if you are employed long enough. Vacation is decent as well if you qualify for it.

    Cons

Worked for NS for 10 years. Since the new CEO has taken over this company will be bought out in a matter of time. They hire you for peak season in transportation then let you go when everything slows down. Micro management is a nice term to describe NS. Not a job for a family man/women. This company is not what it was 20 years ago. You have management that has no business managing a used car lot. Very high turnover rate. If you have a decent steady income job don't leave it to work here.

    Advice to Management

Need to get rid of excess management instead of manpower. You layoff but expect employees to make up for the loss. But don't allow your employees to mark off due to fatigue. Wake up where is the safety you preached about? Jim Squires is a joke.

I have been working at Norfolk Southern full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

$10/month for health insurance for someone who is single. Along with free dental and free vision. Pay into railroad retirement not social security.

    Cons

Management stays in place for a long time, so you can get stuck on pay bands in certain departments. You can always take a lateral move though in order to keep advancing through the pay bands.

    Pros

The pay is good. For the most part the work is steady if you are in a high volume rail hub like I was. The benefits are some of the best in any industry. The retirement plan is solid. Co-workers were generally easy to work with. I loved my job and wish now that I had never left.

    Cons

Feast or famine. If you are on an extra board that is saturated you will work very little. If there is not enough manpower to cover the board, you will live at the yard(s) your board covers. You are at the mercy of management for your job status, but if your union rep is worth anything you can sometimes get around that. Mandatory promotion to locomotive engineer and if you fail any part of the training twice you no longer have a job.

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to make names for yourselves and seeing how many people you all can fire.

    Pros

Its a start to get your foot in the railroad industry

    Cons

The pay is horrible. As an employee , you see the hourly and salary pay that is compensated amongst other railroad companies and it is just not right.

I have been working at Norfolk Southern full-time

    Pros

Company has great opportunities for employees to grow and learn about rail operations. The starting salary is competitive and those that have a willingness to learn can succeed quickly here. Pension is excellent and so is railroad retirement.

    Cons

Erratic work schedules make for keeping a work life balance difficult and keeping a happy family. But management is very supportive of lending a hand when in need.

    Advice to Management

Help out with the work life balance for employees, both management and agreement, by hiring more employees and cutting down on overtime etc.

    Pros

Ok pay after you've been there for over 5 years.

    Cons

The trainmasters will hide in the bushes and wait for you to make the slightest mistake so they can destroy your career.

    Advice to Management

Stop with the sac teams and let people work instead of looking over their shoulders every 5 minutes.
