I have been working at Norfolk Southern full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I work as a conductor soon to be locomotive engineer. Some good things about this job this job is
-the pay is adequate for the work and the benefits are halfway decent.
-has the most liberal policy for calling off work of anywhere I have worked.
-riding around on a locomotive (if you are into that kind of stuff)
    - company paid training (abit pathetic though)

    Cons

Like i said in the title, this is the worst employer I have EVER worked for. Employee morale is the absolute worst I have ever seen. Basically we don't have supervisors, we have rules enforcement police officers. Their ONLY job is to come out, watch you doing your job and FIND something wrong you are doing no matter how safe you are working. They TRY to find stuff to write you up and fire you for. Management is not out to improve you at your job, they are out to fire you. I have previous management experience and the approach to management here does NOT lead to a safe and productive work force. so here is my list of cons.
-They try to fire you from the day you start
    -Hostile management
    -nasty toilets on the locomotives
    -work on call
-Union representation is virtually non existant
-can not use cell phone at work
-spend half of your life or more in a motel
    -nobody is happy
-do not feel at ALL valued as an employee
-the company steals money from you.
    -tries to cover up injuries
-VERY unsafe work environment. Safety is a joke here
    -the training program is pathetic
    -FORCED TO WORK tired
    - alot of backdoor politics here
-expect to be laid off several times during your first 5 years
    -no brotherhood of employees whatsoever
-having to tell people you know that you work for the freak show known as the railroad.

    Advice to Management

As a former manager myself, I recommend you work WITH your employees and NOT against them. It is good for everyone and will MAKE the company money and keep people more productive.

I have been working at Norfolk Southern full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Large Company, plenty of opportunities along east coast

    Cons

Can be very political at times. (Who you know not what you know)

    Advice to Management

IT has been decimated by many bad decisions. There has never been team building exercises or training that hasn't been cancelled or removed. The Moral in IT is very low and while there are those like myself who love the railroad, many of us have lost enthusiasm as it feels at though the company no longer supports those who support the rest of the teams!

I have been working at Norfolk Southern full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Union worker so harder than most places to be fired
Easiest physical job I have ever had

    Cons

*Work life balance has been horrible for me due to being a newbie.. if you want good work life balance ( if that is day shift for you) You wont see it for years.
*For me, is has been a real struggle to get into management.
*Appears to be the "good ol' boy selection"
Craft employee, you are based to be on your shift by seniority, so if you want day shift, it will probably not happen in time to see your kids grow up.
    * Gossip here and the backbiting is honestly worse than ANY work environment I have ever worked in, the worse part is the management do NOT stop it and entertain it.
*Full grown men acting as if they are entitled , they work aprx. 2 hours if that out of their 8 hour shift and they still complain. Very sad.
*And this may not be appropriate , but if I were a black female , I would have the promotion I want, we have a couple black females here who cant tell you the components of an engine yet get paid bank due to diversity.

    Advice to Management

Need to recognize the ones who are proud and care about there jobs.

I have been working at Norfolk Southern full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great earning potential and benefits. Not being cooped up in an office all day is plus. It’s a decent place to work if you do so safely and pay attention to detail.

    Cons

Too top heavy in management. There are so many supervisors concentrated in one area that you feel like you’re being hunted or nitpicked to increase resume bullet point stats for their next position. Unions suck as well.

    Advice to Management

Lighten up. Some mistakes are counseling opportunities. I can understand if you are faced with something serious, but talking to employees about minor incidents is very effective. You don’t need to put paperwork in someone’s file EVERY TIME something happens. Use proper and appropriate discretion.

I worked at Norfolk Southern full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pay and benefits are second to none. If you love to always be traveling, this is the job for you. Advancement opportunity is there.

    Cons

Always traveling. Working long shifts and on call 24/7 365. No home life at all. Constantly moving if you want to be promoted. No chance for spouse to have a stable career.

    Hour Lunch Break
    Pay for Parking

    Cons

NS has a policy of hiring for life but unfortunately does not take the time to develop the people. Promotion is based on tenure and relationship, and corporate structure is thick and hierarchical. Therefore there is a bureaucratic strangle on ability to improve the company.

    Advice to Management

Have an actionable vision along with complementary strategy
Hire and promote the right people to execute the strategy
Remove the wrong people who cannot execute the strategy
    Execute the strategy
