I have been working at Norfolk Southern full-time

    Pros

Great introductory management training, great for getting management experience, railroad retirement benefits, pension, job security. Good, hard working, salt of the earth people.

    Cons

Nepotism and favoritism (friends of generational employees, people who make friends with "the right people") determine advancement in spite of the continuous insistence that merit, performance, and "stepping up" are what determines advancement. Those they want to move up are coached, developed, and given every opportunity with mistakes overlooked or chalked up as a learning experience. Those they don't want to move up or that don't fit the aforementioned criteria have the smallest of mistakes pointed out with no credit for the large majority of the correct or above and beyond work done. They expect you to put the railroad above everything else in your life including your family, your health, or anything else that is considered a reasonable work-life balance and they say as much regularly. A good, positive, and grateful attitude is expected regardless of any work conditions or how lower management is treated. Lower level management is continuously partially or fully shorted on annual bonuses due to upper level management mistakes such as bad operating plans or blatantly poor business practices....meanwhile upper management always gets their bonus and stocks.

    Advice to Management

Practice what you teach when it comes to management style (positive reinforcement). Stop the nepotism, favoritism, and perpetuation of the same management style and militaristic micromanagement. Catch up to the times when it comes to work life balance. Actually base advancement on merit and treat everyone equally, whatever is wrong or right for one person should be so for all people. Allow managers to actually use the skills and abilities you teach them in the MT/CST training instead of treating them like non-managers. Pay your managers what the job is worth instead of treating railroad retirement and pension as current pay.

I have been working at Norfolk Southern full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pay is about the only pro to working here. The downside is you will work all the time and not be able to enjoy the income.

    Cons

Management is spread too thin in the field and expected to be available around the clock. It takes working around the clock to fulfill all the duties given to you.

    Advice to Management

stop micromanaging and cutting the field management positions. You can't expect someone to always work on days off and on just a few hours of sleep. If safety was important you wouldn't work your people so hard

    Pros

Business is strong, market fluctuations have less overall effect on operations. NS is well diversified in it's traffic base. There are no worries of job loss. NS requires HIGH level of integrity. You can count on the word of the people you work with. For someone with my background and education, NS provides opportunities that cannot be found elsewhere. They promote both from within and without, looking for competent leaders and managers, pedigrees and connections will not help you if you are unable to advance the business. Lastly NS provides above average compensation

    Cons

Union shop, long hours, unions, very young front line supervisory staff

    Advice to Management

We're on the right track, keep supporting those in the field. Swift and decisive action against those with integrity issues is appreciated
