    Pros

At Nortel, if you are new graduate, you will learn a lot of technology. From program language, code standard, to telecomm. protocols, you also got professional training. This helps your future career. Nortel was too nice to employees.

    Cons

At Nortel, sometimes you feel the overlap of product developments. Also there are some employee just came for earn money, instead they did not make contribution to code.

    Advice to Management

Unfortunately Nortel was gone. I cannot make advices to the management team. I know some of the managers moved to RIM, then they made RIM gone. The culture of Nortel is too good to allow lazy people stay here.

    Pros

In its heyday Nortel provided an opportunity to make a career out of a job. Since their stock plummeted, it has become a death sentance

    Cons

Employee Morale was very, very low. Nobody has any faith in the future of the company. Every one is overworked and underpaid.

    Advice to Management

    Sell, and fast

I worked at Nortel Networks full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Fantastic to work with such talented people on world class products! We listened to our customers and our designers and, by doing so, created the most reliable and feature rich telecommunication products in the world.

    Cons

Last few CEOs did not understand the business and started cost cutting and layoffs which improved their bonuses but killed innovation, hurt moral, and destroyed customer confidence. Trust your staff. They created the business and have a passion and desire to have that success continue. Employees were treated as a liability rather than the intellectual assets that made the company what it was.

    Advice to Management

Lead through vision, not cost cutting. Listen to your people. Together Nortel could have had an excellent future. Instead, management threatened employees with firing and verbal abuse if the disagreed with any proposed changes. A company cannot function that way for long, and Nortel died after 125 years of success thanks to this poor management.

I worked at Nortel Networks full-time

    Pros

Even though you had a set job description with corresponding responsibilities, there was always the opportunity to try new things, join new projects, etc - never ending on-the-job learning potential.
    Very courteous and professional colleagues.

    Cons

The Company filed for bankruptcy in 2009 and has closed it's doors.

    Advice to Management

    No longer applicable

I worked at Nortel Networks full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Nortel was a Canadian icon with plenty of intellectual property. A lot of money was spent on R&D & it owned many patents still in use today.

    Cons

It's unfortunate that mismanagement & the financial crisis finally put this company into bankruptcy. Selling the right line of business of at the right time could have meant that other lines of business would continue to survive.

    Advice to Management

Obtain information & make a clear decision. Don't freeze when put in a position to determine a company's future.

I worked at Nortel Networks as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Felt respected, well compensated, and had interesting work to do

    Cons

Poor CEO resulted in company all but disappearing. Not sure there's anything left!

    Advice to Management

R&D is important. Drasticly cutting back on R&D may have resulted in short-term gain in share price, but killed the company.

    Pros

This was a great Canadian company to work for. It was the pride of a nation for over a century and provided many opportunities for its employees.

    Cons

Greedy executives got in the way. Sadly, they tried to bring in too many American Execs who were more concernded with picking the bones dry than saving what was left of a Canadian institution.

I have been working at Nortel Networks as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

I work as inter in Optera branch. Mainly focus on firmware development. While there, I get to learn new technology, work independent, and under minimal supervision.

    Cons

A lot of learning at beginning. You would have to work on your own with minimal help from mentor
