I worked at Nortel Networks full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The dotcom hysteria had just reached its apex when I joined the scene, and for a while mine was the best job I could ever hope for. I likened the atmosphere surrounding telecom to accounts given of the California Gold Rush, albeit without the risk of failure. Telecom was too big too fail, its frontiers seemed endless.
No expenses were spared to "git 'er done" as dozens of sage and wise execs came and went, all of them talking about "moving forward with a black belt", grabbed their hefty severance packages and booked, leaving the next to issue earnings restatements and invariably follow suit.
It is quaintly overlooked that Nortel was a Canadian company, not the "typical greedy American corporation". Yet the Nortel suits' hubris and swagger easily matched that of Enron's, WorldCom's, Lehman's and GM's visionaries.

    Cons

It's a lowdown, dirty shame how Nortel cannibalized itself and its "leaders" gleefully left their workers without pensions.
I'm reminded of Nortel every time I see unkempt, slapdash data closets in violation of OSHA and Bell Standards, telephone connector boxes streetside left open, the lids taken off and "forgotten" by the techs themselves...

    Advice to Management

Nothing you do or say will ever make you look less like telecom's money-grubbing Harvey Weinsteins, every one of you.

    Pros

good work, life balance. hours were reasonable for the most part. they had good 401K matching and good vacation.

    Cons

Stock was skimpy and worthless. Total compensation low. company networking products weren't competitive, which wasn't an inspiring work environment.

    Advice to Management

Need to break down the barriers between groups and have stronger messaging and leadership from management. compensation not competitive enough to keep good employees.
