I worked at Nortel Networks full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Was a really good place to work from late 90's thru mid-2000's.
Great, intelligent teammates and an environment with plenty of resources.
    Able to telecommute full time.
    Good software processes.
    Great facility.
Good work/life balance. Nortel clubs. Workout facility.
    Great affordable health benefits.
    Good retirement plans.

    Cons

Execs drove company into the ground by trying to be in too many markets at once.
Nortel culture-at-large did not provide much diversification within a team/product. Engineers would get stuck on one aspect of a product/software (code owner) which limited visibility of the big picture. This limited effectiveness of code and document reviews.
Had to move to another department for growth and promotion.

    Advice to Management

    Too late. It's over.

    Pros

Northern Telcom manufactured some of the best equipment in the industry as evidenced by success with RBOCs & major accounts Fortune 500

    Cons

Channel and distribution conflicts. Still managed by "Old boy network" Men from Canada who were managers because they came from Canada not because of skill
or experience in the US. Many internal politics & Canadians with NO talent or skills in developing strong customer alliances in major accounts in the US

    Advice to Management

Reward and groom achievers for promotions to management. Keep the Canadians out of competitive sales and major accounts. Engineers from Canada are OK because of their familiarity with product design and life cycle

    Pros

You will excel in maintenance and install of switch related equipment. Travel & education is paid for, Home state based, Benefits, strong and reliable company, vacations, holidays paid. Stability.

    Cons

it was hard to move up in pay or advance in your position. I had to lowest raise but yet the best work performed. I received a 2 penny raise and the manager above me that played games on his Lap Top and went out shopping while I completed every job many with the Quality Audit coming back with ZERO defects had a 3 dollar raise. that's when I Hired on with uswest.

    Advice to Management

I really did like the job, tools lap top and everything was provided. the knowledge they gave me was top notch and irreplaceable. Please don't forget or lose sight in who is actually doing what
