I worked at Nortel Networks full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The only "Pros" I can think of were that I met & worked with many good people over the years.

    Cons

The obvious place to start is that the management found a way to take a company that had been in business for more than 100 years & bankrupt it. There were so many "Cons" about working here, it's hard to even know where to start. The management was insulting, WAY over paid & all in all they were just plain terrible. Which is obvious again, because they ran the company into bankruptcy.

Did I mention that they/we paid more than $21 MILLION US to Motorola to buy their CEO. They would have given him away for free just to get rid of him.

They cheated thousands of employees that were laid off, out of their severance package.

    Advice to Management

Do not show your faces around any former employees.

    Pros

Competitive salary levels. Cutting edge product development and job opportunities. Excellent personnel at line level. Good balance of work demands and recognition of quality of life demands.

    Cons

Top management and board ignored problems and delayed addressing fundamental problems for years. Could not recover when telecom went through downturn.

    Pros

Good and hardworing engineers. Great beautiful campus. The cafeterias are beautiful. The benefit is average. It was a great place to work back to 2000.

    Cons

Too many do-nothing managers from executive level to middle levels. No career advancement opportunities. No job security. Layoff all the time until bankrupt.

    Advice to Management

Not necessary now since the company is sold out piece by piece. There is no core leader to take the advice.

    Pros

people were easy to work with and product range was interesting. The frequent Travel was also a bonus for me.

    Cons

opportunities were limited, pay increaes were slow to come. Very unstable work environment as you did not know if you would have ajob the following day!

    Advice to Management

They need to focus on the grass roots level of the company by injecting some youth and people with passion.

    Pros

Nortel used to be a great company before the MBAs took over. A lot of the parts have been sold of the competitors. The fall of Nortel has led to the hi tech sector in Ottawa badly hruting.

    Cons

The company is now being sold for scraps.

    Advice to Management

If you thought long-term, you wouldn't be in this mess.

    Pros

Complete lack of accountability (if that is what you are looking for), Lack of vision & strategy allows you to pretty much do whatever you want - regardless of how it might impact the business (call it creative license), Out of touch with customers - so anyone can claim to know what the customer wants, You get to be around gifted people - whose gifts go completely to waste

    Cons

Working on project after project that gets canned, No opportunities for promotion, the rare person who is promoted leaves you scratching your head as to what possible attributes account for said promotion, belief that great technology will lead to a great business

    Advice to Management

Collect members of janitorial staff, assign them your jobs.

    Pros

It was a very nice place to work until 2000. From there it all started going downhill. The pros that existed in the good times have been all wiped out.

    Cons

    Constant layoffs
Very bad quality of execuitve management
Executive management forces project managers to do offshoring/outsourcing without reality checks

    Advice to Management

You should be ashamed about how you destroyed a company with >10o yeras of history. it did not have to be this way.
