I worked at North Carolina State University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good work life balance. Nice working environment. Nice weather in North Carolina. Good opportunity for student who want to go a long way either in industry or academia.

    Cons

No clear career plan for Ph.D. student. Chemical engineering department does not have many affiliation with companies. Those who want to pursue a career in industry have to submit resumes online like others.

    Advice to Management

More connection with industry would be really helpful to graduate students.

I have been working at North Carolina State University part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Everything has been on my times. I have been able to work when I am able and can choose not to work when I am really busy. This is a very good opportunity for the college students that have busy and varying schedules.

    Cons

So I've been working for over 6 weeks now and I still haven't been put in the system for pay yet. There has been nothing more frustrating than this because I don't know what caused the hold up. My advisers continuously fought for it, but the system was moving very slowly.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing the things that you are doing. I understand that I was the guinea pig for the specific program that I'm in. The meetings have all be helpful and so has my mentor.

I have been working at North Carolina State University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

My office always had a very positive work environment, and I really enjoyed my supervisor. NC State did a great job of facilitating an inclusive work atmosphere that never made me hate coming to work.

    Cons

In my specific department that I worked with, the leadership in one of the departments we were closely associated with ended up being fairly political and at times downright petty. While workplace politics are always present, I thought this instance was out of place and excessive.

    Advice to Management

Perhaps to look at the departments management, and their employee retention rate, and see what kind of employees you're losing, and if they're the kind of employees you want to keep, perhaps consider letting the incumbent manager go.

  9. "Great opportunities for students through assistantships"

I worked at North Carolina State University part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Given the enormous breadth in areas of research, NCSU provides great opportunities for student research assistants, both graduate and undergraduate. I worked on a short research contract to provide software for a lab. It was interesting experience working with a number of departments.

    Cons

Given the short term of my contract, I would have hoped for a little more guidance from the principle investigators.

    Advice to Management

Keep offering exciting research opportunities to not just graduate, but undergraduate research. It is an invaluable experience.
