    Pros

North Seattle College is a supportive working environment with a strong mission of student success.
Strong core faculty and professional administrators.

    Cons

Budget issues have been an ongoing problem for the college. As the economy improves in Seattle, enrollment decreases. The college relies on FTE funding from the state. As enrollment decreases the funding to the college from the state also decreases.

    Pros

Teaching there was great. The dean was supporting (she left now) and the students were well behaved.

    Cons

Adjunct status means you are on your own the moment they don't need you.

    Pros

Supportive and fun environment working with college students and helping them to succeed.

    Cons

Pay is too low for administration staff, especially those with a Masters degree. Limited career growth.

    Advice to Management

Provide a career path for staff. Staff working for Bellevue school district earn more than many of the program manager positions. Review pay scales!

I have been working at North Seattle Community College full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Teach, advise and support students while creating and building programs & classes while working with industry experts and colleagues. Teach online and on campus. Choose to work or not work during summers.

    Cons

Prior to last year, before new president, new vice president of instruction, new human resource director, new unit administrators; the campus culture was primarily collegial, supportive of new ideas & discussions, valued expertise, etc. Now under new administration, it is micro managed by administrators who rarely listen to recommendations or feedback from their front line employees (faculty & support staff), creating a hostile work environment for those to don't "toe their line" no matter if it helps or hinder the college mission and core values. If you can work in this environment for 2-5 years, then you'll out last this administration/new campus culture.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your faculty and staff in an environment that let's them honestly share their suggestions and input without risk to improve programs & services. Ask open ended questions. Be transparent.

I have been working at North Seattle Community College part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

This used to be a great place to be. Our former Dean was engaged and cared about her staff as well as the students. There have been changes, and the same is just not true now. Many of the instructors are idealists who love the students and go the extra mile even when their pay does not reflect their efforts, which is always, so hopefully the new dean will catch up and improve morale. There is a potential for good here as long as those in positions of power work for a collective good rather than personal gain.

    Cons

There are a few toxic instructors who despite almost begging to be fired, will not be because of tenure status. Part-time instructors are expected to take classes at the last minute and prepare materials with little advance notice and no pay. If a class doesn't fill for a full-timer, that person can steal a class from a part-timer who has prepared all of the materials. The rules and disrespect shown to some instructors leaves many people jaded, and all the good instructors worth their salt leave.

    Advice to Management

You have instructors that harm the students and the reputation of the school. Get rid of them. You are breaking the spirits of the good instructors who have to deal with the ramifications.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at North Seattle Community College (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Nice people. Academic environment. Nice facilities.

    Cons

The exterior of the building does look a bit depressing, but that can't be helped I suppose. They were trying to mimic the Bauhaus period of art when they made the building.

    Pros

direct help to students, lab facilities are modern

    Cons

dean is a micromanager, they are not family-friendly, schedules are not flexible, too much turn over

    Advice to Management

choose more wisely your upper management, micromanagers harm the institution
