I worked at North Star Resource Group full-time

    Pros

Management at my specific office was fantastic to work with. Very ethical and fun to be around. They are doing good things.

    Cons

You should basically view it as a 90% commission job for a company with bad benefits. I also was uncomfortable portraying myself as an "independent" advisor when clearly we pushed a specific life Insurance company from Minnesota and used a broker owned by the owners of Northstar with much more expensive costs than are necessary.

    Advice to Management

You would retain better long term advisors if compensation was at a professional level. It appears that this is set up almost intentionally so that new hires bring contacts to senior advisors instead of actually having the long term interest in mind of advisor.

I worked at North Star Resource Group (Less than a year)

    Pros

Friendly office environment. Little to no micromanagement. Met CEO the first day.

    Cons

Low pay compared to other internships.

    Advice to Management

Maybe hire fewer interns and pay them more.

I worked at North Star Resource Group as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Loved the atmosphere, mentors were very helpful and were more than willing to help with anything, great leadership and teamwork, positive environment

    Cons

Lot of cold calling as mentioned in the interview process but great for skill building, marketing and overcoming adversity, want to learn more about retirement and 401k planning

    Advice to Management

Continue to mentor, stay positive and encouraging throughout the process, diversify tasks and more hands on financial planning meetings and advice

I have been working at North Star Resource Group full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

If things are going good, they are good. Unlimited growth potential.

    Cons

However if things are going bad, they don't help you get back on track. Instead they take stuff like your stipend to make it even harder. Don't necessarily care about you they care about what you can do for the company.

    Advice to Management

Don't take away peoples stipends, they need that to live. If you want to stop the high turn over in the financial services industry, don't make it harder. Make it easier.

I have been working at North Star Resource Group as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

It's a great company with amazing values and they really care about their employees. The training seems very sufficient to set-up one for success in the future.

    Cons

Lots of marketing required, independently contracted so I have to take out my own taxes.

  9. "Solid Experience"

    Pros

    Great opportunities for those working

    Cons

    Work can get very tedious

    Advice to Management

Try to work a little closer with interns and not just let them go off on their own.

  10. "Great mentorship opportunities, but poorly executed"

I worked at North Star Resource Group as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Charismatic leadership
Improve soft skills (professionalism, phone communication, problem-solving)
    Sales experience
    Open-door policy

    Cons

The interns are not truly viewed as potential full time advisors by the mentors. The internship seemed ineffective in terms of marketing or true finance application. It sets up future financial advisors relatively well in terms of networking, but not enough real experience beyond the case study.

    Advice to Management

I wish I had been exposed to the financial software and retirement planning tools, not simply cold-calling and compiling lists of names and phone numbers.
