I worked at NorthWestern Energy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people are great if you work in good department. Money is great starts low but increases quickly and the benefits are pretty awesome too

    Cons

You may have supervisor that is not easy to work with. No freedom to be creative. Wages start out low. If you don't have a degree you probably will never work there

I worked at NorthWestern Energy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Excellent management. They seem to care about you as a person and not just as an employee.
    Good pay and benefits.
Great desk-to-field time ratio for engineers. About 60% field time in the summer, 30% in the winter.
Good work/life balance. For the most part it's pretty easy to leave work at work (unless you're on call) and you should rarely have to work extra late or come in on the weekends (note: some people do work late and come in on the weekends, but that was never my experience).

    Cons

Not very mentally stimulating if you like engineering. Lots of interaction with people and crews that are not always very cordial. These can sometimes be pretty stressful. Lots of time spent on mundane tasks, and pretty basic (read: old and outdated) engineering software (which they are currently in the process of updating).

    Advice to Management

It never hurts to communicate expectations clearly and often, and feedback (both positive and negative) tends to be pretty slim until a problem arises. Giving negative feedback early could cut off problems before they happen, and giving positive feedback often can help keep people moving in the right direction.

I have been working at NorthWestern Energy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I have greatly appreciated the concern NWE shows for my personal goals and ambitions as well as safety. Safety is always emphasised above efficiency. Shortly after I was hired, my manager sat down with me and asked what direction I wanted to go - towards management or developing expertise in my department. That really made me feel comfortable discussing my goals.

    Cons

The insurance package is excellent... if you expect to have major medical work. The deductible is so high that I don't expect insurance to ever pay a penny towards my expenses. The Health Savings account does help make up for that as the company pays into it monthly (if you're on the High Deductible plan)

I have been working at NorthWestern Energy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good pay. Decent hours. Good benefits and PTO

    Cons

Management is ridiculous. They are not very understanding if you are going through a major illness. They say their is room for advancement but the criteria is unreachable even if you have years of experience there.

    Advice to Management

Hey how about you give people who have worked in your establishment for YEARS a chance in other positions.
