I worked at Northern Arizona University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

people/student customers were great, some of the co-workers were good to work with, learned a lot

    Cons

upper management didn't listen to employees, would change the way things were done without notice and then get upset when it wasn't done the new way...

    Advice to Management

listen to employees, have meetings or notification when changing a way of doing things, give it time to get set in place, work as a team and collaborate

    Pros

casual environment, lots of time of for service professionals, tuition reduction, flex schedule

    Cons

the university has a category of employees which it calls "Service Professionals", it might as well be called "contract for hire, until we don't like/want/need you anymore". These employees get "higher" pay, but have to deal with 6 month contracts, with an option to extend to a year. Every year as a service professional you pray you didn't upset someone off too much that your contract does not get renewed. The university has the right to cancel your contract at any time, giving you 90 days severance (which is not bad) but really its moving money, because chances of landing a similar type of job in flagstaff for the equal pay are slim to none. If the university cancels your contract, they do not have to give you a reason, which is convenient for them because a lot of dubious unethical (though not illegal) activities can happen depending on where you work or who your supervisor is.

    Advice to Management

I gave them tons of advice when I was there, no one ever listened. Why would they care now? My advice to people making management decision is to stop being a manager, really, you just are not good at it.

    Pros

    Great benefits. Flexible work hours.

    Cons

Very secretive environment that does not promote independant thinking.

    Advice to Management

There are too many layers of management that can easily be streamlined. Staff at the lower levels are very fearful of the upper division management. The protocals in place to get approvals are very stringent. Doors were shut and staff were expected to be quiet and do their job - nothing more nothing less.

the quickest way to summarize everything: dysfunctional and incompetence abounds.

I worked at Northern Arizona University part-time

    Pros

Worked around school schedule. Very flexible hours throughout day.

    Cons

No room for moving up or obtaining any type of pay raise. Was paid very little for job duties and responsibilities that required much more attention such as plumbing, high voltage electrical and carpentry.

  8. "Lack of Diversity"

    Pros

    Amazing views of the mountains

    Cons

Lack of Diversity in upper management ( Residence Life in particular) , you hire people that are pro diversity but yet 80% of your employees are white. How much sense does that make? Not to mention the denial about the issue . Their are almost 21,000 students on campus 888 are African American.

    Advice to Management

Expand your search for smart black students and employees ,NAU I promise they are out there.
