I have been working at Northern Essex Community College full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Community College mission
    Location
Faculty are there for the students

    Cons

    Bullying behavior by management
    Discriminatory practice towards women
    Not a team environment
Power seekers vs serving the community
    Hostile environment

    Advice to Management

Your reputation in the community college world is suffering. You do not have a reputation of being a place people want to go to work but rather seek lawyers after employment-quite successfully too due to your poor management and their behavior. You need to create a nicer environment in which to work.

I have been working at Northern Essex Community College full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Love the students! They have a wide range of abilities and talents, and each is on their own path and timeline. Interacting with them is the best part of my day!

    Cons

Jobs are being cut and those who stay are getting additional duties on top of what they already do. Being a public state institution means you're at the mercy of the budget and every penny is scrutinized. The place is getting very top-heavy.

    Advice to Management

The current administration is running this place into the ground. I understand that we're in a recession and belts need to be tightened, but STOP HIRING UPPER MANAGEMENT and cutting student support services (and those with direct student contact) to fund it. And when you do dump all these additional jobs on people, please stop with the 'positive spin' BS you throw out to cover your behind. I realize that dead weight needs to be cut and things done differently moving forward, but be transparent with your employees, communicate truth, stop hiring/promoting your cronies, and please stop promoting people who have no people skills.

I have been working at Northern Essex Community College full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The sense of community and support at Northern Essex pales in comparison to other institutions I have worked. NECC is leading in new innovative ways to provide quality education to adults in the Greater Merrimack Valley.

    Cons

There could be more equitable services and support provided to all campus locations of NECC. If you don't work on the main campus in Haverhill, you have to travel frequently which takes time and money away from the primary focus of your job. Be prepared to accommodate folks at Haverhill campus frequently.

    Advice to Management

Try harder to actively engage with individuals working from campus locations other than Haverhill and downtown Lawrence. Specifically consider their placement (including main collaborative offices/reporting structure) in regards to their jobs before assigning their location.

I have been working at Northern Essex Community College (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great students! They really work hard. Most faculty are committed to doing a good job for the college and the students. Many will go the extra mile to be helpful.

    Cons

I used to love it here, but now senior administration is terrible, and top-heavy! Some key administrators are passive/aggressive, and indulge in cronyism, while others have political aspirations which result in making poor decisions. The salaries are low. The work/life balance is way too work heavy for such little compensation.

    Advice to Management

Treat employees better. Be more transparent, less deceitful and finally put an end to the culture of fear that has been prevalent for years.
