I have been working at Northern Illinois University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

NIU employees are generally cheerful, helpful, and accessible. They really care about what the student is experiencing and about each other. People look out for each other and truly care about the students, staff, and faculty.

    Cons

Because of the state budget, NIU has to make cutbacks. Those cutbacks will affect the employment experience. Not only have there been no raises in years, but now people are being laid off in order to cut back expenses. Unless you are a tenured faculty, you're job isn't secure.

    Advice to Management

Baker is doing a thankless job under harsh conditions. Keep the student experience at the center of your considerations. That's the reason we all are here in the first place.

I have been working at Northern Illinois University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The benefits are great and affordable. My colleagues are the best I've ever worked with.

    Cons

Huge decisions made by the president affect the 'little people' in extremely negative ways. We are not considered in these decisions, and are not heard when we voice concerns. Most of my coworkers have been at NIU for over a decade and never received a raise. When the cost of living goes up and there are no raises, it's the equivalent of being demoted and our quality of life is effected. Also, I believe any social security you've collected over the years is wiped out when you start at NIU and you become ineligible for it.

    Advice to Management

Management is good. The higher-ups don't care much for the rest of us at all and morale is immensely low.
