I worked at Northern Natural Gas full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

None that could come close to outweighing the negatives of working here. Pay is decent for technical and professional positions.

    Cons

Where to start? It is the most demeaning, negative, punitive, toxic culture I've ever seen. And we all know the culture is defined at the top layer of the organization. There is no tolerance for mistakes. Management touts "candor" ad nauseam, but make no mistake, candid feedback is only acceptable top down. Try being candid upwards in the organization and there will be consequences. There is literally no appreciation for employees or recognition of the contributions they make from senior management. If you are lucky enough to get it from your direct manager, kudos. The focus is all negative. Who made the latest mistake and now can we make an example of them? Upper management thinks they can control the actions of their employees, both at work and in their personal lives. What a joke. There is not one positive review for this company and I would question any that suddenly appear. My guess is once senior management gets wind, they will "encourage" their minions to write positive reviews - or else.

    Advice to Management

This isn't the industrial revolution, the days of managing by fear are over. Respect and appreciate ALL of your employees, not just the chosen few.

I have been working at Northern Natural Gas full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

In general the people at Northern Natural Gas are good natured and friendly. Northern does give a complete benefits package and is a very good opportunity for young people coming out of school to get experience working on large construction management projects.

    Cons

Northern Natural Gas has failed to develop its culture and is currently not developing its people. The management has at times pursued their own interests at the expense of hurting their employees.

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to divide your efforts across so many objectives and focus on what can give benefit to the organization. Set your priorities and plan, execute, check and adjust. Stop shortcutting your goals.

    Pros

Good salary. For a young person starting out, this company can offer a lot of experience.

    Cons

The company attitude is that they pay well so that gives them the ability to treat their employees as badly as they care to. It is a top down dictatorship that causes a terrible environment to work in. It is staggering how many people with many years of dedicated employment have left the company.

    Advice to Management

Treat people as people. Show some feeling and compation toward your employees.

I have been working at Northern Natural Gas (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay, decent benefits, good people. Heavily engrained safety culture.

    Cons

A constant heavy thumb on employees that snuff out any employee drive and ambition. Constant upper management disagreements that cause turmoil among the front line workers. ALL but a very few decisions can be made without management approval. Not wise to make logical decisions without fear of retribution from management.

    Advice to Management

Fix the finger pointing, and micro managing the employees that WANT to do a good job that they were hired to do. Turnover of good employees is incredible. They keep walking away due the smothering atmosphere.

    Pros

Great place to work for lazy employees! Good benefits, however pay is under average with similar positions at other companies. A lot of freedom and limited supervision. A few good apples make this company from being rated lower. There are many opportunities for people willing to pursue them. A lot of people leaving in the next 10 years open things up.

    Cons

A few up and coming individuals give company some potential for the future. Current management is top heavy with a older generation and seeks limited risk and organization.

Organization and efficiency are the lowest priority and most of the burden ends up on the employees. Shows limited appreciation for its employees and some with great potential do not receive the support they seek.

    Advice to Management

    Appreciate and respect your employees.

I have been working at Northern Natural Gas full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They aren't moving to Houston and the work force is old and retiring

    Cons

Northern is completely focused on their customers which should be a good thing, but in this case that only applies to external customers and not their internal customers who are the employees. Employees are continuously bombarded by procedure after procedure and silly rule after silly rule while having to CYA at every turn. When mistakes are made (which is often due to lack of automation) then it's a mad rush to judgement as everyone scrambles to pin the blame.

Progress is discouraged as the goal is not to improve the product or the process, but to save money at all costs and just throw more procedures and people at the problem. From top to bottom things are very territorial and each department is in their own silo. This leads to crippling disorganization and employee apathy as instead of having employees focus on their specific strengths, work is distributed to multiple employees with no one able to take ownership of the issues. Instead people are continually trying to pass the buck so that when a problem arises they can't be blamed and punished.

    Advice to Management

Trust your employees and loosen the reins. People's creativity is being completely smothered and the company is quickly falling behind because of it.

Times are changing and people are no longer willing to be held down for 30 or 40 years just in the name of keeping their jobs. When they feel marginalized and are treated like children they quickly tune out and do nothing but come to work and collect a paycheck.

    Pros

Very stable company and lifetime security

    Cons

Very regimented and set in their ways. Anything outside of the norm is greatly discouraged.

    Advice to Management

Get with the times! The focus on some many things of little importance has blinded them to advances in technology and a changing workforce.
