I worked at Northern Trust full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The benefits package and pension is very good

    Cons

The company structure and lack of any support, the management is based on micro management but also any lack of management support when it's needed. The whole structure is based on blame and who can take the fall. No ownership is ever taken and if it does it's very much swept under the carpet. There is an uncomfortable atmosphere and there are a lot of old pockets of staff that have been in the same roles for many years and lack any responsiveness to admitting errors, providing support or even open to change. The firm is built on its customer excellence however this is clearly lacking operationally internally. Unfortunately a very very toxic environment. Almost felt like working with a pack of fighting dogs.

    Advice to Management

Look at the toxic environment / HR need training in issue resolution / eradicate the fear mentality / provide better training to people / update poor systems / stop micro management / senior manager need to take more responsibility for inadequate staff and have a back bone when questioned on issues and resolutions / address the in fighting / HR and operational managers need training on issue resolution and mental health issues as a few people were directly suffering and very poorly managed throughout. Whole structure needs a refresh.

I worked at Northern Trust full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Competitive benefits and decent wages.

    Cons

Ever since going public, the bottom line is to impress investors. It's an old crony, good ol' boys select group of male leaders in key positions with very few female top executives. This company is all about doing more with less - less people, less resources, less work/personal life balance. They cram employees into small cubicles with the exception of those holding upper management positions. Even the department managers, in many departments, work in cubicles. This makes it difficult to have meaningful conversation without disrupting other workers.

    Advice to Management

Stop squeezing down your work force and work spaces. People need to be able to converse and share ideas. Get rid of the old fogies still in decision-making positions, including those on the board of directors. The company can still be profitable with a full staff. CEO Waddell caved to investors.
