I worked at Northrop Grumman full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pay was good, health benefits where good.

    Cons

Management does not listen to employees. I brought ethics violations and federal contracting violations by a sub-contractor manager to the attention of Northrop Grumman management and I was given the excuse "He's the manager" by my Northrop Grumman management. Those excuses cost Northrop yet another employee because I cleaned out my desk and walked off the job because I was not going to deal with the corrupt sub-contractor manager who was introducing risk into the government contract without government permission and making it impossible to do what I was hired to do.

Northrop black lists employees who leave under duress or other than desirable circumstances and give negative feedback to potential employers when doing an employment background check. This was verified by an associate who called NG and posed as an employer seeking to hire me.

    Advice to Management

LISTEN because you already have a 30% attrition rate in your employees due to poor management.

I have been working at Northrop Grumman full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Really difficult to find something positive. Talent + for the one place to list employee career goals. Now if management and talent acquisition would use this tool correctly to move employees around within the company like they should.

    Cons

Benefit cuts. Used to be 8% for a 401k match. Dropped to 4%. Healthcare skyrocketed.

More and more tasks were added to job jar. Workers neither compensated or recognized for added tasks outside of job description. Performing multiple jobs and only paid for one.

Talent Acquisition (TA) is woefully unskilled at finding talent within the company for placement in other positions. Zero assistance or placement provided to skilled employees with varied backgrounds and degrees.

Severe lack of communication from management at all levels. Same issues are addressed yearly by a survey and nothing ever changes.

    Advice to Management

Communication is vital in a team environment. Engage with your employees instead of making them feel like just another insignificant number.

    Pros

Lots of opportunities for technical work (engineering, project management, software development, etc.) Got to work with space ground-control systems, communications systems, software development, satellite systems. I even got to see YF-23 Grey Ghost up close and some incredible technologies NG-EADS proposed for the tanker (our country's military loss for not implementing this). Received three performance bonuses which is unheard of in DOD contracts.

    Cons

Neopotism+Peter principal management+little chance to advance/transfer beyond position hired in to. Also, performance bonuses were so that the company didn't have to pay increased salaries. HR and "Engineering Center Managers" were NOT my friend. (Their mindset was more on laying off/hiring new staff vs. growing existing staff to keep contract fees down.) Loyalty was not rewarded. GREAT difficulty in transferring to another position/location upon end of contract. Diminishing benefits package that annually provided less and cost more.

    Advice to Management

Employ a variety of feedback/recognition for top performance. The "one size" approach does NOT fit all staff, therefore listen to what your people are saying. Ensure non-attribution of skip level meetings. Give preference to existing and proven staff to other company opportunities and locations.

I worked at Northrop Grumman full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great customer, great immediate supervisor, fun job, great benefits (education)

    Cons

Management chain was stovepiped with no backbone with the customer and no forward thinking on how to grow the program as well as the team members. It's rarely the company, but the immediate leadership that makes or breaks a person's experience at a job.
