I worked at Northwest Independent School District full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Well funded, tech savvy and clean. Top of the line facilities and a model district in appearance. Many extra curricular activities to sponsor and get involved with. Awesome teaching staff.

    Cons

You MUST teach a certain way and that is the ONLY way. If you fit the profile they want you to have you will survive. Could not believe that administrators are NEVER around and absolutely clueless on today's students

    Advice to Management

Don't micromanage teachers when many of you haven't taught in over a decade. Never tell an employee that Special Education is just "smoke and mirrors"

    Pros

High achieving and learning environment. Lots of caring faculty and great communication amidst teachers, parents, and staff. District is well known for academics.

    Cons

Paraprofessionals could be paid a higher wage grade or have room for advancement due to longevity within the district. Needs the option of being paid monthly our bimonthly

I have been working at Northwest Independent School District full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The pay is competitive and that's it.

    Cons

When you try to leave, there are threats to have the TEA revoke teaching license. This is a hostile work environment toward people of color and gays.

    Advice to Management

Stop leveling threats and deal with the racism and homophobia and your turnover rate will reduce.

I have been working at Northwest Independent School District full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great pay and benefits, immaculate schools and classrooms, opportunity for professional growth, technology readily available. This is an outstanding job if you're a slave to your profession.

    Cons

Extremely stressful environment, teachers swamped with "busy work" (bulletin boards, duty, etc.) that is not typically required in other districts, there's always a new "push" for one thing or another and it can be overwhelming to keep up with, parents in my rural school were some of the most difficult and unsupportive I've encountered.

    Advice to Management

Lighten the load on teachers and focus instead on celebrating the successes of your students. There is a reason the teacher turnover rate in Northwest ISD is so high!

    Pros

Ahead of the curve in the aspects of technology and academics.

    Cons

Schools are spread out because of the size of the district which causes some disconnect.

    Advice to Management

Remain focused in students and their success.

    Pros

At Northwest ISD all employees have incredible opportunities for professional development. LEAP and LEAD are classes designed for new leaders that are offered annually. Additionally, all employees can access opportunities for growth and development.

    Cons

Northwest demands excellence in all areas. That is a pro; however, that demand can be time consuming.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work!

    Pros

Lots of opportunity for continuing education.
Good salary as compared to surrounding schools.
Latest technology and plenty of resources.
District is in a nice area in which you always feel safe.

    Cons

    Too much top down management.
Constantly have to document your work and student's work.
So much documenting for administration's benefit that it takes away from teaching and planning time.

    Advice to Management

Trust your teachers and give them time to teach.
