I have been working at Northwestern Mutual as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Fantastic work environment, very collaborative to help the people who work hard.

    Cons

Can seem like a commission trap where you feel obligated to keep working once you realize how much work you put in.

    Advice to Management

keep pushing people hard and definitely keep the mentor program.

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great company atmosphere, freedom of making your own schedule, great deal of upward mobility in the financial rep/advisor position, really strong resources given to help representatives succeed.

    Cons

No guaranteed salary, in a representatives first year, it is very hard to get their feet off the ground, especially if coming straight out of college. All compensation based leads to very low/inconsistent income for first couple years.

    Advice to Management

Begin first year reps with a base salary to help them get off the ground after training. The incentives for performance are good, but often out of sight when just starting.

    Pros

Very friendly and fun atmosphere. Potential to make a lot of money.

    Cons

Very awkward sometimes calling on old friends, family and asking for more leads from them. Sometimes you annoy people but thats sales.

    Advice to Management

None. Management gives you a lot of help and opportunities.

I worked at Northwestern Mutual as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

It's a well respected company in the industry, and gives you ample opportunity to be successful.

    Cons

It's a tough job. High turnover rate because so few people are cut out for it. 100% commission pay structure makes for a high risk/high reward job.

    Advice to Management

Make sure everyone's clear about what they're signing up for.

I worked at Northwestern Mutual full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Amazing company.. great name- can never deny that, and that's the one thing you need in sales. This is a straight up sales job , and if you love insurance and whole life, you will do very well, and make a lot of money

    Cons

I realized Northwestern isn't the best at everything, and other companies are as competitive... Company is very conservative, which is nice to an extent, but doesn't compete in many areas at end of day.

    Advice to Management

Not much advice to management, because for most part you are an independent contractor. My advice is to make sure this industry and company is the right fit for you personally and with your values. If it is, and you work hard, and have sales skills, you WILL DO extremely well.

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Strong company, strong culture, strong training, many different paths you can eventually pursue once you have built a clientele. Managers seem to care.

    Cons

100% commission. Can be extremely difficult to make steady money. Not for everyone - mainly Type A personalities do best; position requires relentless drive; very specific business model/platform which relies on very high activity numbers, so prospecting, networking, and phoning is critical.
