I have been working at Northwestern Mutual full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Since starting, I have had world class mentors teaching me 1 on 1, and constant attention if I needed it. It's amazing how much people will go out of their way or sacrifice their time to help me learn. I have so much in a short 2 years. I cannot see myself every working somewhere else.

    Cons

You have to be a self starter! This career provides a ton of autonomy and flexibility...but the people that abuse the flexibility end up failing. It's important to be a self motivator to earn the money and freedom that you want!

    Advice to Management

Keep utilizing a "team culture". I love that I have a team I can go the extra mile for. It's also great being surrounded by people who are in the exact same spot as me. It's fun learning and bouncing ideas off of each other.

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There is a untarnished record I have never had to apologize for with Northwestern Mutual. It starts by doing what's right for the client who are essentially owners of the company due to it's mutual structure.

Technology in the 4 years has improved dramatically, going from an arcane enterprise customer management system to leveraging the power of Microsoft CRM which integrates with all other enterprise platforms and now doing everything digital and paperless.

The opportunity to make and have an impact in the Los Angeles area is even bigger than it was before as we enter into more diverse marketplaces and expand our reach with the advisors we have on the ground.

    Cons

Finding the right person who fits into this culture and industry can be a challenge. It's a great career for the right person who has the discipline, work ethic, and hunger for growth and success.

    Advice to Management

Downtown LA, West LA, and Irvine are great offices so we need more to grow to our potential - open more in the South Bay, Pasadena, San Fernando Valley, and Inland Empire.

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

You have complete control. Pension. Deferred Comp. You own your own business.

    Cons

If you don't know for sure that you want to be in financial planning, you won't make it through the first 2 years. It's a hard but rewarding job if you want it.

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

People are extremely friendly and happy to help if you need it. I have a very flexible schedule that accommodates my class and school activities.

    Cons

The office is very bland in color and can be hard work in sometimes. Also if you are in the middle and not near the windows you barely see sunlight until you leave.

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I finally feel like I've found a home with the LA office. Coming from an extensive banking background, I knew I wanted to be a business owner but wasn't sure if it would ever be financially feasible. Northwestern gave me the opportunity to build my own business and have a better work life balance.

    Cons

It takes GRIT, but worth every second. I now have choices in my life that my other friends simply do not.

    Advice to Management

More emphasis on attracting diverse talent - the office has improved tremendously within the last six years but it would be awesome to have more bilingual advisors!!
