I have been working at Northwestern Mutual full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

This website does not differentiate between two types of jobs with NM. Here is the difference

Financial Rep - a self employed independent contractor licensed to sell NM products and services. This person is not an employee of NM.

Home Office Employee - an employee of Northwestern Mutual or a subsidiary, but none of these people sell anything.

There is a big difference between being an employee and an independent contractor.

    Cons

Financial Rep business is very tough - only one in ten make it to five years. You eat what you kill and get paid on commission. You need to have a lot of self-motivation to make it.

Home Office is a giant bureaucratic mess. It works well if you just want to keep your head down and punch the clock, but if you have career aspirations, be prepared for politics, brown nosing and back stabbing.

    Advice to Management

Instead of telling the employees how to act and think, trying modeling the behavior yourselves. Straight talk, Act Like an Owner and other junk phrases don't mean anything when senior management doesn't follow them. This company has a great reputation and used to have a great culture - those are things of the past.

    Pros

Great training program. Great being able at keeping with meetings that are required and holding one accountable.

    Cons

Support for a first year rep was not really a good one, too many fees before you'll start seeing income initially.

    Advice to Management

Be more upfront about the what the job really entails, if a rep states they need help then help them. If one isn't able to help them in that form then state that isn't available in stead of having them string along.

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual as a contractor (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Free lunch if you work on campus. People are "nice."

    Cons

Risk takers/entrepreneurial types not appreciated. NM tries to pretend they are moving into cutting edge tech and products but the vision is based on middle age white man's ideas. Now appears they are trying to remake themselves into a "digital" company, where one can buy products online, bypassing the field salesperson. I don't know how this will shake out in the end. Problem is their portfolio is largely invested in bonds, which as we all know, have paid next to nothing for years. So that's a good time to build a massively expensive new headquarters which will be mostly empty since NM sent all operations to the Franklin, WI site. NM has never paid "market" rate for most positions, and hence loses the most highly skilled people to other opportunities on a regular basis.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the current CEO, who made a big mistake mortgaging the company future by spending megabucks on a non-essential new office building. Don't expect big things from LearnVest (the "online" investment platform that NM paid big bucks to acquiire:) putting all your personal financial details/passwords/access to your investment accounts online is putting you at risk for hacking and identity theft--I've had problems like this with other investment firms (times two) and even the Post Office! There are only so many identity theft monitoring services that one can use at a given time.

    Pros

Northwestern Mutual is willing to train people with limited experience in a specific field, but sees their potential and puts in the investment and training to get prepared for the role. The firm encourages continued education. Also, their charity involvement with Alex's Lemonade Stand allows great opportunities to engage with the local community as well as fosters a great work environment.

    Cons

This role is more than a job, it's a career.

    Pros

The impact you can have on people is satisfying in making them more financially secure. I love the independence of creating my own schedule. There is also unlimited potential for income.

    Cons

Downsides is that it is hard. A lot of phone calls and a lot of rejection. If it were easy everyone would do it. No necessarily a bad thing

    Advice to Management

Training and leadership is great. Keep on investing in it because it works
