I have been working at Northwestern Mutual as an intern

    Pros

    Challenging work environment
    Really improves your communication skills
Real hands-on experience running your own business
A ton of internal support - they really want you to succeed

    Cons

    100% commission based
It takes a long time to get through the sales cycle which means that you do not get paid until close to the end of the internship
You have to rely and call on ALL of your contacts, even people you haven't talked to for years

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Free Lunch (but for how long?)
Smart co workers (but for how long?).

    Cons

Fear and stress everywhere - just laid off over 1000 people mostly out of IT and largely those over 40 were targeted. Replaced with H1B Indian contractors on campus as well as jobs pushed offshore.

Management/company no longer cares about employees - management thinking is now short term and not very well focused.

Targeted layoffs continue that are 'agile sized' (5-7)

Leadership doesn't understand: agile, engineering, leadership, and transparency.

    Advice to Management

Your role is to ensure that the customer receives value for product and that the organization is profitable.

Your role is to provide clear and transparent direction and expectations, to enable and encourage a collaborative work environment and to exhibit a genuine care for your employees. You are failing here.

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Longstanding corporate entity with highest financial rating and stability in the Life Insurance Industry.

    Cons

Unbending belief that decisions are right no matter how off course they prove to demonstrate.

    Advice to Management

Retain older and tenured employees and listen to the solutions they propose. Model of relying on instant and on-demand human resources will provide temporary solutions instead of long term stability.

I worked at Northwestern Mutual full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great for millennials with no experience.

    Cons

Bad for any one with any type of experience. They have let go of over 1,000 people with great experience. Pushed them right out the door and right away hired much younger resources. Yes, I was one of the many that was let go. Just shy of 15 years. BTW-got a much better job with a pay raise :)

    Advice to Management

Don't let LearnVest run the business. They might be great as a startup, however, steady and true they are not. Also, the CEO is only in it to make money. I believe this company will de-mutualize within 10 years. mark my words.

I worked at Northwestern Mutual as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Northwestern Mutual has a great training program for interns and you learn a lot while you're there. You also have lot of autonomy especially for an intern.

    Cons

One of the cons of working at Northwestern Mutual is that your pay is virtually all from commission. Another con is that you have to do all of the prospecting on your own.

    Advice to Management

One piece of advice would be to give some interns a few quality leads to begin the internship which will help them get them generate some business at the beginning of the internship.

    Pros

Flexible schedule; good benefits. Interesting work and a company desire to improve.

    Cons

Many legacy systems, business area's that are resistant to change and new ways of doing things. Too much use of Offshore software development resources.

    Advice to Management

    New York must be tamed.

    Pros

NM is a great place to work. Good culture, work/life balance, good people.

    Cons

It can be hard to maneuver out of a role or grow because sometimes it seems like leaders only care about themselves.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on developing people/creating career paths within your division/department.

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Job is fun, interesting; coworkers are great. The offer free lunch for all workers, permanent and contract.

    Cons

Management is inexperienced and too controlling (paranoid). They'd rather spend resources making sure no one ever crosses them instead of trying to better their leadership skills.

    Advice to Management

Care about your peoples' success as much as you do about your projects success. Stop rewarding people that hurt other employees relationships.
