I have been working at Northwestern Mutual full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

This review is about working at the home office in Milwaukee.
    * Mutual company - allows a focus on longer-term goals and objectives without having to always look over your shoulder about the next quarterly earnings report.
    * In the past, has been a great place to move from department to department to gain a broad perspective on our business.
    * The company has realized that "what got us here won't get us there" and so we are actively working to update how we work, what we focus on to bring the highest value to our policy owners and clients.

    Cons

    * As mentioned, the company is in the midst of a transformation. In my not-so-humble opinion, this has also meant that in many areas, we've lost track of what our core values are. There are still people who are focused on doing the right thing above all else. And there are others who are acting out of fear, or focused on the almighty dollar (to the exclusion of other balancing considerations). There is siloed decision making that has led to letting go people who are outstanding contributors while keeping others who are, well, not.
    * I don't think the company has figured out yet what our core values going forward *really* are. There are lots of examples of decisions or situations where the rhetoric and the action don't align, which I see as part of the process of reconciling noble intentions with on-the-ground business realities.
    * It is both an exciting and confusing time to work in the home office. If you are considering joining the company, I would caution you to consider how comfortable you are with working through a ton of ambiguity and cognitive dissonance.

    Advice to Management

I know that change on this scale is by its nature a disorienting, uncomfortable experience. To our senior leaders: Make sure to continue to emphasize why we're doing the things we're doing. And ask yourselves and your leaders up and down the chain - What are our core values? Would someone new to the company perceive that the decision I am making is consistent with those values? Do I need to work harder to connect the dots so that the leaders who report to me understand the "why" and can consistently apply it in their decision making?

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Free lunch. Transforming to SAFe and Scrum/Agile methodologies in technology. Moving to a Product/Engineering model for technology.

    Cons

Even after layoffs and some transformation there are still too many leaders. People closest to the work are not involved in decisions that impact the teams.

    Advice to Management

Listen. Let the people who know the work do it and work with them directly to effect the transformation. Resist the urge to NMize agile. Resist the urge to go SAFe for everything. "Do" don't manage.

I worked at Northwestern Mutual full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There use to be many Pro's, but now this company is like all the rest.

    Cons

Don't do well, they will get rid of you. They are replacing many employees that have made them who they are and what do they get? Laid off! That is what they do now. No longer one of the best places to work. I have many friends that have 15, 20, 30+ years and they just got rid of them and replaced them with young MBAer's that have no clue what they are doing.

    Advice to Management

Stop saying you are laying off due to low interest rates. We all know why? You over extended yourself on that great big building and the other one just down the street. We all know that NM has had record sales and dividends every year.
